I just got a fish aquarium and my ammonia levels are high. What do I do??

So basically what im trying to do is take out the nitrites by adding 45 grams of 99% pure salt. Then in about how long do you guys think the tank will cycle?

You are not removing nitrites by adding salt. The chloride ion in NaCl (salt) will be processed by the fish's gills instead of toxic Nitrite. Nitrite poisoning causes brown gill disease.

Nitrites are extremely toxic. But yes, it means the tank is cycling. You want to detoxify the Ammonia as soon as possible, for it can be as harmful as 20ppm of ammonia

He's using a toxic calculator to determine how much the ammonia measured is toxic ammonia and non-toxic ammonium. Scroll back through the pages.

oh ok thank you lol

Ok salt is dissolving in 3 gallon bucket.

I will pur the substance in about 5-10 minutes. I have been stirring it with a small net

salt has been added to the aquarium

Ok so 2ppm of nitrites in my 60 gallon aquarium and .25 ppm of nitrites in my 5 gallon aquarium. I have already added 45 grams of salt to my 60 gallon aquarium. Since the smaller aquarium is now showing sign of nitrites should I be adding some salt to that aquarium, and is there anything else I should be thinking of for both aquariums?
