I think a pot should be placed over you so you can think about what you've done.

So, this fish should (a) know what humans consider to be socially acceptable behaviour for it? And (b) should be aware that s/he failed to fulfil those human-defined behavioural requirements? And (c) should then be aware that what happened next was in fact 'punishment' that (d) was inflicted due to the fish's failure to 'live up to' some arbitrary, human-imposed behavioural standard?

Does it concern you that you've made so many assumptions regarding a creature that, to our knowledge, has no higher-level cognitive functions whatsoever, never mind fully developed concepts of morality, right and wrong, punishment and so forth?




This is pretty disturbing. I'm not sure that it did fix your aggression problem, really, and I think it is quite sad that you have taken such an extraordinary dislike to something so defenceless that you chose to place under your care. If you don't want an aggressive fish, I wonder then why you bought it or why you keep it? I sincerely hope that you rehome the poor creature, and, for that matter, all your pets, until you have sorted out for yourself why you need to inflict suffering on those weaker and smaller than yourself.

I don't have a tank to move him to while I rearrange. I don't hate the fish holy crap. I put him under the pot in the tank and rearranged the tank then let him out again. I didn't beat him with a shovel then make him dance for a turkey baster full of water.

I think it's responses like those above, though insightful and filled with ideals valuable in our hobby, are the reasons I am losing interest in this forum.
The new trend seems to be....... Post your comment with sarcasm or humor. Have others critique your fish keeping skills & make a mockery of you all with no attempt at "making light" of anything. Defend yourself. Repeat.
Can't we all have a sense of humor or at least provide the benefit of doubt before "teaching lessons"?

Hamster balls would not be a good idea as they would not have adequate venting for water flow. What I've done in the past in my 100gal's is make an egg crate (light diffuser) box. These are hung at the top area of the tank. I usually made the boxes about the size of a 5 gallon tank, obviously with larger fish you would need a larger one. I would normally do this when introducing new fish... I would put the most dominant fish in the box while the new fish gets acclimated and gets a chance to stake out a territory. The easiest way to do this is to cut 5 pieces of egg crate and bind them together with sturdy fishing line. Obviously there would be a base and the other pieces would have to be matched to its measurements. You may want to use a top though... I lost a fish (male grammodes) for the first time yesterday with this practice... now I have to go to home depot and buy a piece of egg crate to make a top.

Actually, I think the problem is that you didn't give clues for me to assume enough. I assumed a bare minimum; a literal reading.

Not to point out the screamingly obvious, but I can only judge by what you write, which, crucially lacks a tone of voice, facial expressions, and so forth, and when you write several different messages that describe trapping a fish, chasing him till he 'gives up on life', hating him, etc., I confess that a 'funny' tone of voice entirely escapes me (and, it would seem, a number of others too); a point that is nicely explained in this article. The tone that any of us write with in our head doesn't readily embed itself in our words, so if you make unmitigated, apparently serious statements, the chances are they're going to be taken literally. (That article explains this much better than I do.)

How different this is to your first few messages. This really only leaves two possibilities, one of which is that you were indeed joking and just didn't do it very well.

Sorry about that. I'm still new to these forums. I was really caught off guard when I saw the responses I had got. Just didn't think people would believe I bought a fish that I hated simply to torture him. But I understand now. (this is my brothers account, forgot he was logged on not me lol)
