Awesome pick up I love Nandopsis!

I was told by Don Conkel to mix koi food and cichlid food 50/50 to help prevent bloat. He said the fiber in the koi food is what does the trick. Haven't tried it though, just passing it on.

Looks like a nice male hait to me (nice pickup), although dominant females sometimes will adopt a male coloration. The pic below is a female

If it's in a community, (if it were me) I'd give it it's own tank, even if it's a small tempoary tank.
Stress from other cichlids can cause bloat, especially if they con dominate him (or her).
Haits also like a bit warmer temps than some others, low 80s F.

nice haitian, its a male, if its 4" its got alot of a greater chance of survival without bloating but basically dont feed too much, feed food's which can be easily broken down, feed a variety of foods.

im pretty sure haitians are sexed the same way as nandopsis tetracanthus, that being said youll need to wait a little while to figure out its sex..around 3-4 inches to know forsure. mine change colors all the time

Awesome pick up Balton!! I have read that these guys can go both ways with aggression. Mostly of what I have read thoug is that their decent temperment... Don't quote me though.. LOL

I don't know if I'll try that. I think the NLS pellets will be good enough. He's chowing down on them and they're supposedly highly digestible.

Unfortunately it's not 4" yet.

This one was the only one with a longer bi-level dorsal fin. The other ones had a shorter rounded off fin. I want a male because they're such a show fish when adults and I don't really want to breed him....yet.

It's important to me that he'll mix in a community setting. I'm not getting my hopes up for now because I don't think they're called Black Nasty for nothing. As much as I like him, he might have to find a new home if he's a serial killer. I might be getting ahead of myself though, let's see if I can get him to adult size first without dying of bloat.

They're the same thing. Nandopsis haitiensis is it's scientific name. Black Nasty and Odo cichlid are common names.

Awesome fish, hope you have better luck than i did. I tried everything I could. The water was 84* F, varied diet, bi-weekly water changes. Eventually all of them stopped eating and died a couple days later
