I need help with a new 20 Long I am setting up...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Warning: I'm not a Cichlid guy. Now read on...
I think putting the O's in the 20long will buy you a little more time to get the 110-180G you were looking at. I would skip the 75G. The Oscars will outgrow it, then you will be on the hook for yet another large tank. Plus you could fit a few Botia Kobutai in there with the Oscars...hehe
Convicts will breed like crazy, so consider the extra time & attention that will take. Plus, that 20long will be empty again in a few months after the O's move. More time to decide.
IMO If I had an extra 14g laying around, I would probably do a small brackish tank. Either a pair of Figure 8 Puffers or a Molly/Guppy/Platy/Invertebrate tank to breed my own feeders for the Oscars. Go take a look at the "End-All Mini-Monster Thread". I forget which forum its in, but just do a search. There are some great small tank fish in there.

Dude I couldn't help myself I set it up for my two Oscars...lol

This is what I did.

I went and bought all the goods glass versa tops, good light strip, and filters.

Now I bought 1 Aquaclear 50 and one Aquaclear 30.

I took the biomax ceramic rings from my AC20 and mixed them into the biomax bag for the AC30. I put the AC30 on the 14 gallon and my water got even clearer (if that is even possible lol)

Now I setup the tank and put the AC20 with two cycled sponges and new biomax on the 20 long.

And I put the AC50 on it.

It is all setup and running now.

So I am going to monitor the water parameters in my 14 very closely over the weekend and do w/c's if necessary to keep the parameters in check.

Then when the 20 long is cycled (which with the seeded AC20 on there should be quick) I will transfer the Oscars to the tank.

What do you think?

Oh and I did not paint the background I liked how it looked against by bedroom wall.

Here are some photos of the setup.

Sorry about the crappy pics all I have is a PowerShot Point and Shoot.

Are you doing a fishless cycle with ammonia ? I don't see any fish is why I ask and the BB will die off if there is no bio load. Worst case scenario you could transfer one oscar to keep the BB growing and wait a week or two then the other.

No I'm gonna throw in some giant Danios to cycle the tank. The pictures were taken right after I set it up.

Right on man just curious. It looks stunning ! I like it a lot. Good choice on the filtration as well. Some yellow labs are going to be very happy or two growing oscars :)
