I now hate bears

Lived in black bear country (PA) for years. Bears rarely attack people. Eliminate the free food (garbage) and the bears will move to another area.

People rarely attack people too but that doesnt mean one doesnt need to be able to defend ones self.

I, personally, am not afraid nor thinking I am in any immenent danger.

However I do have a five year old girl who, until recently, would go out and play in our back yard any time she wanted. Would YOU not have at least a little concern over that? Especially a bear with cubs.

I cant do anything about my garbage. No room in the garage. I can only use trash cans approved by WM so no bear proof trash cans. What I will probably do is just drill a couple holes in the can and keep it bungeed. Not bear proof totally but probably enough to keep them from getting trash every where.

do bear proof garbage cans keep people safe?

LMAO...I guess maybe if they had to hide inside of one...and here I am with the nerve to sometimes complain about possums and racoons coming into my yard and doing the same thing.

Raised 3 kids while living in PA. Had cubs on my deck a few times eating out of the bird feeder. Got rid of the bird feeder. Didn't worry about the kids playing outside. Bears in most cases avoid people.

Someone mentioned some type of motion activated trap well perhaps you could rig up something with one of those loud air raid sounding sirens. That should send them back to the hills.

the sound trap was me the problem with them is the sound has to keep changing

On a side note paintball gun now have water filled balls you can use just for this type of thing.

I saw a recorded study that confirms bears, raccoons, and more of the "intelligent" types of critters, are no longer going on food routines in the forest. Instead, they are strictly sticking to heavily populated areas, as they have learned trash is a jackpot for them.

Makes sense to me and it may have something to do with the influx of possums and coons some parts of my city has experienced over the past few years.
