So earlier today I went by a petstore today to get some toys for my macaw and I go there about every 2-3 weeks to get some toys for her because they are a relatively good price. So here is the part that really kills me they have a illigers macaw there that has been there for almost 2 years one of the employees told me. This should be a species hat should be left to breeding only in my opinion since they are Cites appendix I. Then it isn't socialized at all it has pin feathers all over its head that it just looks like it needs to have a good scratch. So I asked them if I could see him and they were extremely hesitant about it and the employee said she didnt know how to handle birds so I got it out and surprisingly it stepped up pretty easily but it was still freaked out biting me and squeaking but after a little bit it did calm down. So now I feel very guilty I saw this guy that really needs a home but I really dont have the money(it cost $920 for the bird alone) or space for it and I would have to convince the family too and all of this would be hard after just getting my little girl 1.5 months ago. Moral of the story only bird specialty stores should sell big birds. Sorry about the rant I am just really frustrated and depressed about this.:( What would any of you do?

that sux man, not much you can do really. i mean, you could report it im sure. sometimes stores can get in trouble for "negligence", and ignoring a problem. especially on something that is Cities. or, you could just get it. lol. shame you live up there, i have a couple big cages im not using anymore and id be more than willing to let you have one for dirt cheap.

I'm not a bird person myself- In fact I'm not crazy about powerful beaks near me fingers at all! Always have said that birds belong outside flying free.

Poor bird. Money's tight all-around but maybe you could do fundraising of some sort or start spreading the word to responsible owners. I do think if you remove it another one would just take its place you know? Maybe reporting it would prevent any more birds in that type of sititutation

Theres someone out there that would want this bird and could afford it. Youre right, it needs to be sold somewhere else where it will get the right exposure, and have the right kinda person buy it. The bird is gonna sit there for a long time. I know how you feel, I see this happen to other animals. Maybe you can influence the store to give the bird or take the bird elsewhere where it will be sold.

Oh trust me i have gone through my head time and time again on anywa I could find this guy a home and I have tried to think of someone who would want one but I am just out of ideas for him. And I know if he was bought they woud replace him but they are doing that anyways. They had like 10 large bids in there at once and 4 of them were in the same cage they were a pionus, rose-breasted cockatoo, african, and scarlet macaw. But of course these are getting sold fast since tey are young little babies and are socialized. And I really would love for them to give the bird to another place but is a corporate business so they wont even contemplate it I would guess they had lowered the price though it was originally like $1200 and now it is $920. But if I cant figure out something soon I probably will report them I am just worried what will happen to it after that.

before i started at the shop im at now they had a shop bird (it was a african grey) well the point to the story is the kids who worked there before me didnt know anything about birds so it died they let him sit on the bottom of his cage dieing for 5 days before he died and did nothing to try and help

theres a petland here that sells parrots, right now they have an umbrella cockatoo and an african grey(along with tons on finches and canaries) they have had both for at least 2 years. the afican grey is in a cockatiel sized cage sitting 2 inches above FILTH and not one toy in the cage, disgusting water and sunflower seeds as food(BLEGH) they want 1950 for it which is grossly overpriced, and the reason why it's still there(there is a parrot specialty store upstate that sells weaned babies for $850-$900 and are very well taken care of and socialized) it breaks my heart to see the poor grey in the conditions he's in as greys are my favorite parrot species.

i wish they'd at least give it an appropriatly sized cage with enough room to climb around and at least a toy of some sort..

That's why I hate Petland. Their dogs are normally as bad if not worse than that...It's places like that that are the reason people frown upon petstore puppies so much. We've had people come into our store and talk nice, responsible people out of buying a healthy puppy because of something they saw on Oprah:screwy:
It's sad that Petland and Aquarium Adventure are owned by the same company considering how awesome AA is....
