I sold my freshwater soul...

Buoyancy issues. Even if you have enough weight on it 1 small change in the weight distribution and the whole thing comes up. To risky for me with that much $ tied up into a little space. Corals can be expensive sw fish are expensive. Things float easier in sw too so the mass needed to hold something like that down is going to need to be greater then if in fresh water. I wouldn't worry about putting anything under the rock to be honest but if I were going to id use egg crate.

It seems like there's multiple ways to do things. Personally, I've never used anything under my sand. Just make sure you have some sifters and you'll be good.

What is the purpose of the egg crate or styrofoam in the sand? Any information would be appreciated. I've seen that before with the biocubes, but wasn't sure what it was for.

Protect the bottom glass from a point on a rock creating a pressure point and cracking the glass. Typically salt water aquariums either reef or fowlr will have a lot of rock in them possibly 100's of lbs. One falls or the bottom one has a point on it and it could be" see all the stuff in your tank on the floor". The egg crate distributes the weight and keeps the rock off the glass. Id assume that is also the purpose of the Styrofoam but like I said before.... not me, that's a disaster waiting to happen.

Word. Totally makes sense now. I guess I never had a lot of live rock in the tank. Good to know for the future! :)

Good luck with salt. Gotta be scary to drop a wad of cash and jump in.

It is! I've dabbled in salt in the past and shut it down within a month or so. It was a nightmare and swore I'd never do it again. It was a nightmare because I did it wrong and didn't want to put the money into saltwater. I used tap water! This time around I'm doing everything to the T.

Don't sweat it you got info under your belt. You are not a complete noob. some stuff is different. Are you on city water? And when you say dry rock how dry is dry? Where did you get it from? is it completely white?

I'm on city water but I'm using a RO/DI system. The rock is man made and I bought everything from bulkreefsupply.com. I bought a purple rock, I'll make my salt thread today.

Jwd, totally understand not wanting to do water changes through a long distance.

Would love to hear about your salt water adventures. Salt water is beautiful. I have a saltwater tank, but it is nothing serious and I don't know a lot about it. No corals. Just rocks and a flame shrimp. Would love to learn about corals, set ups, RO/DI, cycling for saltwater. Please keep us posted in the poly section! :D You are always welcome anytime, polys or no polys.

Yeah, now I'll only be changing 5 gallons of water per week vs 100 gallons of fresh that I was doing. I can't wait to share this with you guys, I'll start the thread today!

I have heard that a styrofoam pad has all the advantages of eggcrate and still lets your cleanup crew work all the way down. You have to make sure to weigh it down well. Best of luck!

I've never heard of that but that's interesting. I think I'm going to stick with what I've used in the past which is egg crate.

If it's clean man made just cycle the tank as normal you don't have to wait that long. Only reason to wait that long is if it was originally alive and is now dead. Yours is clean fresh new. Cycle like normal.

That's what I was thinking in the begining and I might just let it cure until I figure out how to stack my rocks.

is it possible to stack rocks without the use of the egg crate or styrofoam? In freshwater, without the tank cracking?
