I just browsed through another forum site and read up on advice they were giving pimelodid catfish owners. We'll call this site catfish planet. They were suggesting that RTC grow to more than 6', and that you'd need a tank width 2x the length of the fish x a length 4x the catfish' length. I have the right mind to post a thread asking to see some pics of these legendary 6' rtc. Biggest I've ever seen was the 58"(I think) 150 lbs one that was wild caught. Not too sure but I think the 15'x8'x3.5' pond I am starting on will do just fine for life. They suggest a 30'x20'x8'!!!!!! Not saying that wouldn't be ideal, but get real. They actually suggest that you kill your fish rather than house it in a "SMALL" tank. I personally think that false education, and trying to turn people onto killing their fish is a load of crap. Not denying that they have a lot of very wise fish people, but I say I love the fact of MFK actually helping people out rather than running them off. If anyone tried to use the old a 400 gal tank is better than 99% of these fish get else where routine they would be shot down by the mods there. I wouldn't try to house one for life in a 400 gal, but that's me. Forums like this are supposed to help people through their problems. I think they intentionally don't diagnose what is wrong with people's rtcs, and tsn because they want them to die rather than live in the small tanks. One lady clearly had a rtc with fin and tail rot. Anyone on a catfish website as a Mod better know what that is, because it's one of the most common deseises that faces the catfish hobby. Instead they were like oh don't know sounds serious, or get a bigger tank like 20,000 gals that will solve the problem. They tried to make her think that there was nothing she could do, but that was far from the truth. I felt like screaming after sifting through the site. I think I will keep all my aliances MFK from now on, but I will try to give advice elsewhere if possible. Might help save a few magnificient creatures in the longrun. Sorry for such a long rant just had to let it out.

Couldn't have said it better myelf I like to refer to that site as the rtc tsn flamming police!!!!

lol yeh dude i totally agree...ure 15' by 8' is more than enough bro. besides they barely swim during the day. thats y i wana add an arowana to the pond...there is basically no activity during the day. they all sleep like logs! im pretty sure 15 feet which is like 3 times their max length is more than enuf to sleep in!

right now on all the other forums everybodys like "OMGZ! u see on MFK they are saying rtc's are fine in a 400 gallon tank...not to mention that albino guy that owns that site!"

lol all in fun of course, but just saying that you could probabaly pull a few things from mfks that has bad info and throw it with a twist. the people at planet catfish are just trying to deter people away from these mammoth catfish, which is nice, but you are correct they aren't helping the situation any.

LMAO.

Yeah I agree that RTC and TSN are definitely not starter fish or a fish for anyone who struggles to pay their bills before they own a fish. I just think that the people who made the same mistake that we all have should be helped a little more. My first catfish stupidly was a RTC. That was before I had the internet or knew anything about benificial bacteria. I got him at 4" and a 55 gal tank. I had him in there for 9 months and got a 125 gal tank and the store told me that tank would do for life. I had two emperor 400 on it. After the fish made it to 2' it started getting sick all the time and the lfs wouldn't say anything other than the fish was getting old. I know now that I should have at least made him a nice indoor pond with massive filtration. Had I had a site like MFK back then to help out and show me how to make a temporary home that's large enough for my cat to be comfortable in while I made other arrangements back then I would have been happier and so would my fish. These people are in similar situations and they basically get the shaft. They go to that site because they are seeking advice and knowledge and I commend them for that, because most people don't care because it's just another fish. I love the site for it's articles, and profiles(not always accurate, but who's perfect?). They just drive me nuts when they tell someone that they need to upgrade to a 20,000 gal immediately or consider putting the fish out of it's misery. Some of them just have 8" rtc or tsn in a 125 or 180 and are trying to find out what the next step should be. They will say build a pond at least 20'x40' or a similar sized tank or your fish will die a horrible death. It would be nice if every RTC on the market could go in a tank that size, but let's face facts they are availible to everyone, and thus whoever gets one will need to be better informed on the options availible to them. RTC deaths in captivity can be reduced simply by telling people about cheap options like cattle troughs or aquaculture bins and tubs. Also home made ponds with a liner. I just feel bad for all those fish and the people left with a bad taste in their mouth unlikely to listen to another forum because of them.:(

oh that seems like I am being a smart @ss, but the LMAO was for the albino owner. lol

I agree blasting somone is not what forums are about .People join forums for comrodiry and the wealth of information avalible on a ton of diffrent species so they can reserch how to make their fish, reptile, animal of choice the most comfortible. Not to hear you need somthing ridicously large to keep your fish in or just kill him b4 he has a suffering death.Help people not harm people .

A LFS by me has about a 30-36" but must be 30lbs or so, RTC in a 300g rubbermaid. I have seen this fish at the same size for over 3 years now. i think that without a gigantic tank they will max out at about that in captivity but I could be wrong. Good luck
