A LFS by me has about a 30-36" but must be 30lbs or so, RTC in a 300g rubbermaid. I have seen this fish at the same size for over 3 years now. i think that without a gigantic tank they will max out at about that in captivity but I could be wrong. Good luck

Get us some pics. I love seeing fatty RTCs! Also commend your store owner for finding a nice alternative for keeping one of these monsters. 300 gal is still pushing it, but could be ok with proper filtration. Definitely want to see pics. I can't get enough large rtc pics lol.

It seams with theses big cats it’s a battle of extremes you get the people with them in a 2 ft tank and have not got a clue (the store that sold them the fish is as equally to blame) and then you have this lot telling you to build a shark tank. I was at the London aquarium last week in one of there tank it has 5 or 6 RTC 1 very large TSN and a shed load of Pacus the note on the aquarium reeds all of theses fish have been donated to the aquarium and have out grown there tanks please be responsible when purchasing tropical fish. If people took note of this and came on sites like this before hand it would be a lot better for the fish and the aquarist. O how big is big boy now Cliff. And a pic of the wife at the London Aquarium(sorry taken with phone).

I felt the same way when I first joined THIS sight :D EVERYONE who has NEVER owned a RTC talks of the mythical 6' giants. I posted a question a while back of anyone with a 4 footer and got no real proof or evidence that anyone has one. I know they can grow huge in the wild but so can just about anything. My big guy is an honest 31" and lives totally comfortably in his own 300 gallon round jacuzzi. He can spin, swim, flip whatever he wants. Maybe ......... when he outgrows this and reaches 72" I'll just have to put him down :screwy: I never liked that other sight anyways. I think I may join that other sight just to flame some of the ignorant flamers :D

How would this thread sound..........

Hi I'm new to this hobby and recently bought a 3" Redtailed catfish for my community 55 gallon. The guy at the pet shop said it should be fine with my fish but has eaten just about everything in sight  He is about a foot long now after about a month. Is a 75 gallon big enough for him for life ??? My two 12" Oscars and 18" Pacu share a 75 and I think theres some extra room on the bottom................ :D

LOL I just replied to a thread very similar to this about cichlids....hmmmm. Yes it's true so many people get on forums just so they can tell anyone and everyone that they don't know what they are doing.

C'mon people let's CO-OPERATE and HELP newbies who made bad descions...not tell them to kill thier catfish! Who knows how many potentially great fishkeepers could be scared away from the hobby by jerks sitting at thier keyboards doing thier best to make everyone else feel stupid!

bob....not to sound like a jerk but 750 would be better or a good size pond or above ground pool....

Tnx for the input guys. Again I love the site for info, just not the forums. My suggestion would be for newbies to come here for suggestions, and go to the other site for a means of identification, and quick facts about the animal. Come here and we'll coach you through how to raise these beasts properly. Yeah even my 36" hybrid is starting to dwarf his home of the past two years, a 350 gal cattle trough 6' dia. That's ok, breaking ground on the new tank tomorrow. It's been redesigned so much, and everyone dissagrees on the glass thickness, plus I can't get any for a good price so I am just doing a huge, massive pond, and will fiberglass the inside. Might do some glass panels on the filter though. Can't wait to get it up and put my fish in it.

Amazing!!!, and the fish too!!!

my son bought a 13" tsn at the lfs. the darn thing is now 15+ in only a month. I have it in a 300g, but IMO it will need to go into a pond soon. Why do these stores sell baby monsters to the public to start with?
