do not plan to get rich off these fish... if you are not gonna use them for feeders then dont raise the fry... no wants to buy convicts from a breeder they are dirt cheap and breed like crazy... breed another type of small cichlid... they all breed in a similar fashion. if u want feeders then cant go wrong... my be better then live bearers
I recently purchased a pair of mated convicts. Any tips on getting them to spawn. I am a fanatic with my water changes, so there is a very regular schedule for that. any thing else that will set the mood so to speak? water temperature, diet, etc?
You can try feeding bloodworms or bits of shrimp to trigger spawning. Bump temps to 80-82 as well. A water change right before this will also help. Honestly, not much else is needed, they do the rest on their own pretty easily.
I keep the tank at 76 but when I want to see eggs, I crank the heater to 82. I then do a large water change with cold tap water and feed frozen brine. For some reason the cold water shock gets them in the mood.
How large do you feed them at? And how many of the initial fry survive to that size? I'm thinking of breeding them for supplemental feeders for a few of my piranhas, but I wouldn't feed them until they were ~1" long
