I thought this was MONSTERfishkeepers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The naysayers are just jealous they don't have the skills to run a nano....I know I don't lol
My shrimp tank ran 40 nitrates and I lost most of them. Meanwhile in my bigger poly/oddball tank I've never read over 10-20. Weird huh? Bigger is kind of easier to maintain :p

I feel like someone could easily take this and say "You think a 55g should be minimum? That's not for monster fish. nothing under xxx gallons should be considered" and then the pattern just going on. To someone with a 55g tank, a nano is tiny. To someone with a 400+ gallon tank, a 55g is tiny. So what's the difference?

For me, that's the beautiful part of MFK--the discussions of sump designs, internal/external overflow boxes, herbie, bean animal plumbing for silent overflows, ReeFlo pumps. What other fish forum has discussions on Ultima II filters? The Set Up/Filtration and the DIY forums on MFK are really great. JK47's plumbing pictures are works of art and motivate me to strive to a higher level. There are some really really great parts to MFK.

I'm new here and this is not in any way to disparage MFK, but I've seen that stuff on just about every aquarium forum I've been on, many times related to nano tank keeping, hint: sumps make it easier to maintain parameters with a small volume of water. Now Ultima's I never even heard of until I came here but I'm glad I did, it's now in my want list when I can finally get an "acceptable" size tank/pond :). The builds and DIY threads here are great and what got me hooked. This is my primary aquarium forum now, big or small tanks, the skills and knowledge are applicable to all of them. Though I don't know that I'll ever achieve the quality of workmanship on this site, it's truly spectacular and something to aspire to.

I've been kind of surprised at the implication that nano tanks are easy, I've always heard the opposite and from my own experience... I wish they were easier!

Like I'm sure it is for many, my dream is to have a giant aquarium but I can't right now for many reasons, so let a man dream!

Figure ill throw up a little derailment also. Surfed through my pics and found one of my nano tanks also.
The bioCubes were so last year. I just picked up the new self sustaining BioOrb. :p

Great point. Years ago I had a 5 gallon nano reef with mostly LPS, soft coral, and sponges. Was the most difficult and high maintenance tank I've ever owned. I spent way more time on that tank than I do on both my ray tanks combined. ( not counting my 1/4 gallon nano ray tank!) Lmao ;)
I know what you mean and money even tho I could have went cheap instead of top of the line but I got almost $1800 in this biocube and ive only had it a month and a half I bought it established from a guy who was moving

I guess I didn’t read the op as saying nano tanks were not difficult. Just that monster fish aren’t kept in them. But I guess folks get real defensive about the size of their... tanks.

I don’t really care about anyone’s argument either way, y’all do you and be happy about it.

But to play devils advocate (like so many others here) when I read a title like “monster fish”, I don’t think of shrimp tanks. That doesn’t take away from the skill level it may take. Now if I read a title like “advanced hobbyist...” , it would make perfect sense. If your two barbs or breeding pair of shrimp are monsters, well I have ocean front property for sale in Arizona ... as the song goes.

Side note: I never look at yalls ages or how many posts. So I pictured a grumpy old man posting the OP. It made me happy.

Thanks for ruining that and making remarks about age. so I looked it up and was devastated.
