Very well said a 14 gallon is not even big enough for the fish you have a 20 gallon long will be much better. You have the money to overfilter the 14 so instead of doing that buy a bigger tank for the fish. perhaps your water level was down a bit (that makes it more like a waterfall and fish that go under can get 'wooshed' downward.
I kept my water level topped up and had no issues.
