id gar fry....i found me some!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i had similar issues with baby aba aba knives.. if your not, try surface skimming when doing water changes so when they come up to breathe the thin " layer" is as minimal as possible, i surmised my knives where actually swallowing bubbles and injesting them vs just breathing.. not sure if this is accurate but once i did this i had success with raising one. I just use a wide mouthed cup and skim off about 10% per day, atm doing this for my baby tank as well as a precaution.

weird. i normally skim off ant film i see. the tank is filtered by a sponge filter so the surface is always churning.

this is an incredible thread

thanks. i hope i dont lose any more. they are almost big enough to go into my 20gal.

Hi sbuse-
Make sure the water temp is more than 75 degrees, preferably 80 or so. They need heat. Done this with no failure a bunch. They should grow an inch a week at least if the water is warm, and well more than that if it is 80+. If the water is cool they will wither and die. Where they are now in the wild they are in 85 to 90 degree water a good portion of the day to digest and get the metabolism going.

I went to what I describe as "Gartopia" last week. All sizes of SNG and LNG. Caught about 45 and released them. Mostly SNG, which were limited in adult size to 18"due to the northern climate and food supply which did not include shad. They were eating shiners in this place and the shiners don't get big like shad as the season progresses. I have never seen so many gars surface in the late afternoon warmth. If I get to 5 posts on MFK I will post some pics.

Hope your gars are well!
