id my friend's fish

I've caught many bluegill and they are nothing close to that, a flash of camera will not have a high effect on a pure bluegill strain. 80% of the bluegill out there have a round disc shape like body, most of the longer body like a bass are hybrid.

First off, a lot closer to 100% have a disk shaped body....when mature! This is a juvenile and has a normal juvenile bluegill shape. Part of the elongated look I also think may be the camera angle. I see no reason to believe this is a hybrid. If you guys see any other evidence, let me know. Seriously guys, give me some details as to why you make these IDs and I'll be much more willing to accept them.

No offense, but being a fisherman has NOTHING to do with being able to identify fish. I've seen guys that have been die-hard fishermen for like 30 years, and don't know what they're talking about in the slightest when it comes to ID beyond maybe 5 or 6 sport species and usually even then, only when they are of sport size, not juveniles (like the very fish in this thread). Sure, I fish all the time, but I know far more about fish ID from being a college student and being taught proper identification techniques. Seriously guys, if you don't know what you're talking about, just don't post in these ID threads
 
The fish is a bluegill, here is why.

And before you guys even say it, yes, this fish is more disc shaped than the original fish. It also appears to be a little older, which would explain the minor shape difference. The two most obvious characteristics from that diagram to look for are the mouth size and that dark spot at the rear of the dorsal fin.

i do have this other picture if its helpful, i didnt post it first cause is less quality than the first.



this is some info i found about the bluegill, it talks about the spots on the ear and dorsal fin, also says young males may be this metallic colour.. i dont know it makes sense to me but i am the noob here :drool:

 
Thank you for that other pic. Can anyone really come up with some evidence that that fish is NOT a bluegill? It even has the blue on the bottom edge of the gill plate that the species' common name comes from.

Baby Bluegill, and you should be careful not to let him play near light switches, he could electrocute his little self, seeings how he's all wet and everything. :D

Quite a true statement, Ive been an avid fisherman for 30 plus years, and a fish keeper of all kinds for about as long, and will be the first to admit that my knowledge of Juvi fish ID has come from the last few months of informal education from Sandtiger and Telost, and Im still centurys away from just spitting out an instant ID on this forum. I will also admit that is not my main objective in being here, I enjoy the hobby and the fish and talking with and learning from the contributors here. But you will also notice i dont jump right in with too many snap ID's. Thats why Sandtiger, Telost, and sometimes our little buddy Mn Rebel, get paid the big Bucks :ROFL:
