ID SHARK GROWOUT THREAD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How do you know yours is a female... and there is NO way that is is done growing at 8 inches... thats just stunted... or maybe the reason why they usually only get 14 inches is cause they slow down alot after 8 inches and people stunt them so an already slow growing fish is stunted and growing even slower... also they could just die cause of small tank before they become monsters...

im pretty sure he meant the senegal stopped growing at 8 inches...

Yeah, I meant my Sen. But my ID's don't seem to be growing too much either. They grew really fast when I first got them but now seem to have slowed down quite a bit. I kept them in a 45 gallon for about two weeks when they were 2". Then I moved them to a 125 gallon and my big one got to about 5" and my small one 4"ish. Even though they didn't need it yet I now have them in a 220 for more swimming room. They still haven't broke 12" but I assume this is due to the fact that they won't eat now! Picky fish...

Not to derail, but I have a question, I just boguth an ID Shark off a member from here thats around 12", he claimed it was around 3 years old. I know that is pretty small compared to how big i imagine they would be atround that age. It was in a 220g for most of its life from what i know, so it should be badly stunted. Do some just not reach thier monster size?

This thread may answer your question(s). There appears to be two distinct groups of keepers - some report slow growth and fish not exceeding 1', others, like myself, report 1.5' in the first year. The reasons behind this have not been resolved AFAIK: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/fo...ght=IDS+growth

I've never personally seen one hit 2'. Much like the petsmart Senegals, I think the size has been bred out of the cheap ones.

IDK if mine were cheap or not but all 15 or so of my 2-footers were rescues. Funny how our experience can vary. I have never been exposed to a small and slow-growing IDS.

Stunting is not only a matter of the tank size. IMHO it is rarely is, excluding the extreme small tanks, like 1'x1' tank for a 1' fish.

AFAIK and correct me if I am wrong, most stunting/slow growth and maturity at smaller sizes occurs because of insufficient water changes which leads to an accumulation of growth-inhibiting hormones in the tank's water that is released by fish.

Some fish don't grow as big in captivity as they do in the wild, for example, common bream - if a juvenile is cut off and cannot reach a big river after a certain point, it slows growing and matures at a significantly smaller size... but that is a bit different topic.

Well i do plenty of water changes so well see...
