I'm sure that's not a gizzard shad. The scale size and pigment are all wrong....Where exactly did you catch these?

fl lol bottom of fl i dont say my location :)

I'm not asking for your location just the fishes. If you're not prepared to let the forum know where you collect fish (river system, county, state) you should be prepared for some bad info, like...it's not a gizzard shad and not a lamprey;)

What drainage? Was the water fresh or brackish? They're Clupeids. Maybe a species of Alosa? Do you have any better pics of the mouth?

I think they might be American Shad Alosa sapidissima. On the fish in question, there seems to be a faint spot behind the opercle, the mouth and eyes look about right, as do the body shape and scales. The one thing is that the maxilla is hard to make out in the photos. I'll say American Shad... just out of curiosity, were they slimier than your average fish?

oh my gosh, they were so slimy there was slime on everything and they were even flinging it in the air.lol

Nice to see you back midnight. Missed your netting threads. I also agree with a species of shad- I don't know enough to pick exact species though. Were these caught in fresh or salt water? Shad live in salt and migrate upstream to spawn. Huge runs in the Hudson each year.
