ID this Giant Gourami?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it is some variant of grey true giant gourami. we called it "gurame kipas" in indonesia. it has better growth rate and wider than older variant of grey giant gourami.
Was this done for the food market through selective breeding?

It looks like an Osphronemus goramy to me, which is highly likely in the first place, given that O. goramy is by far the most common species in the hobby. It is definitely not Osphronemus laticlavius, as a couple people have suggested. O. laticlavius (red tail giant gourami) juveniles do not have stripes, and they have a much larger black spot near the caudal peduncle.

It will be very easy to identify once it reaches subadulthood, but until then, I would stick with O. goramy.

It doesn't look like a giant gourami to me at all, mouth shape is different.

No offense intended, but I'm guessing you've never seen a juvenile giant gourami... This is definitely an Osphronemus sp.. There aren't any other genera that are easily confused with Osphronemus.

I use to own a juvenile that grew to 13" before rehoming. It's likely a common grey giant gouramy (Osphronemus goramy).

If the enlarged teeth are exposed at the mouth, then its an O. Exodon (Elephant Ear Gouramy)

You are correct lol I looked into it but others had already corrected my ignorance

yes for food market. i think there is two different O. gouramy. one with rather scope like mouth the way they eat pellet just like a tilapia continously open its mouth on the surface, it is a pig and grow faster

the other have shorter mouth and eat each pelet one by one.
