Natural Hybrid..

Miguel said he has only seen this ray twice in his years of exporting.. not offered ever, not abundant to a specific river like so many other species. He said the fisherman catch these rays RANDOMLY in ANY area.

The original 'Mantilla' ray was exported by Jose Mantilla to Dr. Ross in the 90s.. An abundance of these 'Mantilla' rays were harvested from a specific locale in Brazil.

Meaning.. Mantilla is either a distinct species that has yet to be identified, or natural hybrids occur much more frequently in this specific area... heck a bunch of hybrids could of been 'water-locked' from seasonal flooding, forcing a whole new hybrid monstrosity to be produced in a specific tributary.

Tough to say - These days ... any ray with a pattern like that is a hybrid IMO, wild caught or not. It's funny, seeing a TON of these rays being produced through hybridization over in Asia, but if it's wild caught it's declared a new rare species.. !?!

Just reinforces my thoughts on naturally occuring hybrids. My "Mantilla" was captive bred at an aquarium... To me that is proof right there that when wild caughts are being brought in that look absolutley identical that it is a fact of nature that naturally occuring hybrids happen on a regular basis.

um ok

10 inches..

maybe try to the General Aquarium Discussion and make a new post?

Welcome to MFK :D

With rays like this being produced in Asia, does anyone know what species they use and what gender of each different one?

My orignal thought was motoroXcastexi but I have him in my tank with a male and female motoro of the same size and a male castexi who is 1/2 inch bigger. Compared to the others his eyes are set atleast 1 to 1 1/2 cm wider than the motoros and castexi. This makes me think there is something else in his blood.
