i believe its a longear because its dorsal fin has 10 spines, like a longear, and its anal fin has 3 spines and several rays like a longear. also the shape of the ear appears to be that of a longear. correct me if im wrong, but i think i have a good chance at getting this right :D

so? am i right?

what type of long ear? if you had a color pic you could tell with sum degree of certainty.

theres only one type of longear sunfish; the longear sunfish is its common name. scientific name is Lepomis megalotis you may be thinking of red breast sunfish because they have a long ear, but they arent longear sunfish.

Please take this in the spirit in which its given, and with the thought in mind, that I too depend a lot on color to identify fish, which will NOT always work. Telost and Sandtiger, and a few others on here can tell you what a fish is by looking at the poo they put out. So i for one will never question their ID...maybe :). After watching this thread for awhile, i see also that Sandtiger did this because he cares, He knows and loves this hobby, as does telost, to some these are just fish, Green,Blue, Longear, what ever. But to them its a lifetime invested in doing it right... And lots would say who cares if those guys know , let them learn the hard way. But those guys love this hobby enough, and care enough to try to pass that on, I for one think we should be more respectful, or just watch if we dont know and hope to learn. Or JUST watch. No offense intended and hope none is taken....... and now i will have the ushers pass the collection plates

my mistake northern or Central. or will just saying long ear be enough?

Le is right, there is only one recognized species of longear sunfish (Lepomis megalotis) however there are sub-species, I'm not looking for sub-species so it is of no concern here. The fish in question is not however a longear sunfish; sorry le, it was a good guess.

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it. This thread is not meant to be a slam on anyone or me trying to get the best of you guys. I'm trying to help those who want to properly learn how to ID a fish. As part of my curriculum in college I had to take ichthyology and we were tested every week on various native fishes but none of them were in color, they were all dead preserved specimens. We were taught how to ID them based on features that are not only forever lasting but also universal to the species. I don't think I would be half as good at IDing as I am if we had done it any other way but I assure you that the thought of IDing a colorless fish was something all of us hated.

Ive been following that thread and I'm not 100% shure thats a pure green. without a DNA test i will not be convised its a pure green. a true expert would know this so why argue?

So you are a true expert or is someone else trying to call me an expert once again?

I don't believe a DNA alone would tell you any fish is a hybrid without somewhat extensive base data from the suspected nearby parent species.
