alright guys enough derailing the thread lets get back to what its about

You're right.

I would like to drop a hint and note to those trying to ID this fish.
I just looked at my peterson's and noticed what I use to ID this fish cannot be found until you read the whole text on the species (it's not in the quick key with the picture).

And I'm pretty sure I would have called this a longear a few years ago without thinking. They are very very similar to longears.

I wouldn't dare post a known hybrid. Those can be a real PITA.

Le is right, there is only one recognized species of longear sunfish (Lepomis megalotis) however there are sub-species, I'm not looking for sub-species so it is of no concern here. The fish in question is not however a longear sunfish; sorry le, it was a good guess.
if your not going to take into account subspecies you will not get a positive id there's 1 unless you wont to count the Florida strain than there's 2 subspecies of the fish in question.

:headbang2:nilly::headbang2:nilly::headbang2

The problem is that truthfully was not an educated ID, Ive just learned that this hobby is stages, my first stage was gather as many of these kewl fish as i can find by any means possible. All of which are classic and no hybrids.

2nd and now stage. i go out and catch my own and find i pull stuff up that dont fit into any pure catagory, and say what the heck is that, so now what ?? these old fish guys wont always be around to save me. I need a good book.
