Ideas for 6ft tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry to disappoint, i really dont like discus.
Not looking for a wet pet either.
I like the plant idea though.
I keep reading about these rare and cool knife fish but have no idea what they look like, their care or where to get them.

If you have an idea of a fish or fishes, pics would be so helpful.

Thanks for the replies

Without knowing the width of your tank, you could get a black ghost knife, or a brown knife more than likely. They will both grow to around a foot. Maybe a little more. There are also clown knifes, and a royal clown knife. I'm sure there are more, but those are the more popular and easy to get. I have seen brown knifes and black ghost knifes at Petsmart.

As far as I know, all knifes should be kept alone. They need a cave to hang out in. PVC pipe works well for that. They are fairly peaceful, but will eat smaller fish. They can be kept in communities with larger fish that they cannot eat.

Or

Synodontis Catfish

Or

Madagaskan themed tank
Paratillapia Polleni
Other madagaskan fish

Or

Planted tank
Dwarf Giraffe Catfish (their is such a thing)
Discus/angelfish
Ebjd
Datnoid
Featherfin Syno

Or

Ebjd
Green terror
Jaguar Cichlid
Featherfin catfish
30+ Boesemani rainbowfish (they get big enough so as to not become a snack)

Or

1 Dovii

Or

Breeding pair of >insert favorite fish<

Etc, etc...

If you were to go with a planted tank idea, i would possibly just do a couple large groups of schooling fish such as different tetras etc, and then have maybe a few smaller odd balls just to mix things up a little...

Since you used to have a reef, I would get a bunch of rocks with a sand bottom and make a bunch of hiding places and do mbuna Malawi cichlids, tons of color, lots of personality, easy to take care of and would have a ton of movement in and out of the hiding spots...

Giraffe catfish can get nearly 3 feet long you know that right? and the dwarf species is almost impossible to correctly identify upon purchasing as there are several species of giraffe catfish with only one of them being considered dwarf. pretty much any supplier would sell you a regular as a "dwarf" to make a sale cause as far as he knows it COULD be. unless you can source a reputable importer who can tell you for sure that it is the dwarf variety I wouldn't even risk it. cause they are so awesome you wouldn't want to rehome him down the line.

and as someone so rudely said that I was wrong for saying he didn't want a wet pet, I switched to salt for a few years and then came back. If he wanted a wet pet he could get a hell of a cooler wetpet in a salt set up than freshwater. Most people coming from salt want to have a bunch of fish, as salt water aquariums are more lightly stocked. so there is a reason why I assumed he wouldn't want to put a FH in his 6x2x2 newly free tank.

How do you feel about Malawi cichlids? as Fat Homer suggested 6x2x2 would give you a killer african set up and you could keep the larger haps in there too. To make this easier how about you just give us a list of the fish you don't like, and that you don't want. that way we can suggest you things that we know you would like?
