IDEAS on potential Tank size for CENTRALS set-up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Imo the sals will probably be alright, I definatly wouldent do salvini, and istlanum.. I don't know of the temperment of ebjds, as I have never kept them. But, if they are anything less aggresive then meeki, I wouldent try them in that setup. I have seen sals and meeki kept together in a 125 with great sucess. But, adding 2 more thorichthys species as well as istlanum and ebjd would imo be a disaster waiting to happen. Maybe one other species. But I would try something from the archocentrus or cryptoheros group. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree with Duane - istlanum and salvini are a whole different level of aggression than Thoricthys or EBJD and would likely kill the others (sooner or later). A pair of either can take over a 6' tank no problem...

I also wouldn't mix maculipinnis (ellioti) and T. aureus - way too close (if not already the same fish, as they're often mislabeled).

I find Thoricthys hard to mix with other Central Americans. They're all bark and very little bite. Fish that figure this out tend to punk them hard.

I definately agree that istlanum is going to be to aggressive so they'll get their own tank... At the moment though my Sals are well below the aggression of my ellioti and meeki. Maybes that will all change if the Sals pair off etc. My large male EBJD is double the size of anything else and way more aggressive. I recon as long as he stays bigger he'll not be bothered by the Sals or Thorichthys.

Can't comment on the others but salvini are no joke. Like many cichlids they often don't turn aggressive until they hit puberty. I remember I had a female sal with 4 midas in a 125. The dominant male midas was maybe 5in and the female was like 3in. Female salvini always hid and stayed out of the way until my midas started to flare at her. She kicked his but and he never messed with her again. I would strongly recommend taking them out of the mix as many have suggested.

Sounds like you've decided what you want to do... When the a pair of salvinis spawn and kill ther rest of your fish, please post pics ;)

Where did I say I've decided? I said "At the moment though my Sals are well below the aggression of my ellioti and meeki. Maybes that will all change if the Sals pair off etc. My large male EBJD is double the size of anything else and way more aggressive."

I will observe their behavour and if they kick off they'll end up in their own tank. My female Sal has been with the EBJDs since tiny and is only half their size... My juvenile male is in a tank with ellioti.... are you familiar with ellioti? Believe me they can be nasty... I had one almost kill a Trimac.

Do as you wish...

And yes, I've kept and bred maculipinnis several times (ellioti is not a valid name).

Wow sure I better listen to you then :uhoh:

Please don't. Just post pictures of your dead fish and Thoricthys hybrids...
