IDEAS on potential Tank size for CENTRALS set-up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wasnt gonna touch this thread but this thread was going anywhere before i ever got onto it. But seemed like a little deja vu and just could hold my toungue any more.

You can blame everyone else about these threads going like this but in the end its YOUR fault. When theres a pattern of this on many of your threads theres probably a reason your rubbing people the wrong way and the threads go south. Maybe you should look at yourself and stop trying all this conspiracy theory stuff about mods (which to honest bothers me the most as is completely FALSE) and actually see that how you go about things get these threads to go bad and in turn get shut down.

Lets be clear.... I've only had 1 thread locked down because I stood my ground about the great Red Devil Midas cichlid dispute and was only defending my fish.... Theres no pattern of threads that go South all the time with me... Just that one and this, which I make two threads in total out of about 25 threads. The rest are very happy non-argumentative, although you did have a few digs in another one of my threads but that didn't deteriorate.

Good luck with trying to paint me as the bad guy... I don't think you're gonna win there.

Right... I'd like to get back on topic and Mods please feel free to clean this thread up as you so feel but I am using it to talk about my new potential set-up not get stuck in pointless arguing with people who hate me.

Thanks:D

I seriously doubt these guys hate you or for that matter are taking this that seriously. You asked on idea for tank size for your stock but like many have mentioned unless you are going with some sort of mini pond your stock will not fare well together. It's not like these guys are saying this to get at you it's just based on the aggression level of some of the fish you have on the list compatibly seems slim to none. Like mentioned, why risk it? Why risk the life of your fish for an "what if situation"? A responsible fish keeper puts the health and well being of the fish first these are living things after all. These guys are pretty experienced I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss what they say. You may learn a thing or two if you sit back and listen so to speak

As far as fish having different "personalities"... that's true to an extent but lets not carry that too far. For example red devils are well known(and well documented) for their aggression. Now yes with that aggressiveness there can be variations but does not mean you will get one that will co-habitate with angelfish. You MAY get one that will have a high tolerance for other fish, aggressive or not, but that happens seldom. I wouldn't go around keeping aggressive fish with milder species hoping you get that one that happens to be peaceful. We can make generalization about species and yes while cichlids CAN differ slightly in aggression there are some fish that are generally nasty and some that generally are not and in this case sals are generally very nasty.

Ok I'll take that onboard... I'm probably going to end up putting the Sals in their own tank once they've matured... the male is only half the size of the female at the moment... she used to display to my Red Devil but always ended up getting nipped. So heres the revised arrangement.

240
4 - 8 Firemouths
2 Ellioti
3 Aureum
2 EB Jack Dempseys
2 Synspilum (or the like)
+ some other fish???? (ideas)

50
Salvini pair

70
Istlanum pair or specimen fish

40
grow on fry tank

40
Grow on fry thank

30
Grow on fry tank

I think your stock list looks pretty good and I wouldn't add anything else to the 240. I'm sure you are aware that the Islatum pair will out-grow a 70 gallon tank in the future so just be ready to upgrade. Also watch your pairs in the 240 as it is likely you may get mixed pairs so if that starts to happen be sure to separate them unless you want hybrids. I think giving the salvini their own tank is a good call it really wasn't very likely to work long term. Good luck!

Also watch the syns I didn't see that those were added to the list. They are among the least aggressive of the vieja species but can be very brutal and get big enough to wipe out all of your stock. I may still work if you get them small and honestly I wouldn't try to breed them because they will snap if you do so maybe just try one instead of two. You will likely be happier with the outcome.:)

Yeah I love the look of Synspillum and seemed to remember they weren't as aggressive as most... Was thinking of having one or two really big fish that wouldn't harm the Thorichs.

Stock looks pretty good. I would get either 1 or 4 ellitoti though. Buying cichlid in 2's or 3's is never a good idea. Conspecific aggression is often much higher then aggression to other species. Also I would take aureum out of the mix. They really do better at cooler temperatures for they are part of the helleri group of thorichthys. EB jacks can be sensitive and are genetically weak. If you are set on them get them larger than the rest of the fish when introduced so they do not have a problem establishing themselves and again I would either get 1 or 4. I think the snys would be fine but again 1 or 4 would be my suggestion as far as numbers. Sticking to what looks like a mexican themed tank you might want to look at bocourti or pearsi as inhabitants to the mix. Are you aiming for breeding pairs and if so which species? I would personaly go for a pair of elloti, a pair of meeki and singles of the big guys. Maybe a pair of jacks also.

Sounds cool... and all very valued suggestions.

I've already got 2 EBJDs.. The male is 6" and quite robust and the female is a third his size. These I was hoping to work around as I want to keep them as they would just be large specimen fish like the synspillum. So with that in mind I would guess I can't get really small younger fish as they'll get eatten. Hopefully the Synspillum will be at the right size.

Will Neets mix in with any of these?
