If you had one billion dollars

A billion is a lot of money, you could do absolutely whatever you wanted.
I would definitely have a few hundred gallon reef tank filled with sustainably aquacultured corals and fish. Maybe break that rule for a couple special fish. Would pay a good company to care for that tank.
Would also build a fish room with a bunch of different setups. Designing, setting up and breaking down the tanks is a fun part of the hobby for me, so I would rather have a bunch of smaller (75-180) tanks than a couple huge ones that never change much. Also this would keep maintenance manageable, as I would rather still care for the smaller tanks myself than pay someone to care for all of them. It gives you a sense of pride when you've done all the maintenance for a fish and you watch them grow up in front of you.

Read through some of the older pages and found out just how much one billion really is. If it really is several times the cost of the fanciest public aquariums, I might try and build a great white shark tank.

Go bigger. The Georgia aquarium keeps whale sharks!

Because they are much more active swimmers, in terms of the proper tank size, going for a great white shark is several times bigger than a whale shark. That's why you can see whale sharks but no great white sharks in, say the Georgia Aquarium.

No white shark has successfully been kept because of their unique requirements. The longest was only a few months I think, and that was a juvie.

Yep. I would think the 3 billion tank would give a great white a much better shot, seeing as it's going to be enough for more than 3x the Georgia Aquarium.

Realistically ,I would get a few more tanks and fish(a few 5x2x2s and a 6x2.5x2 and aros, bichirs, gar and snakeheads to fill them up lol).
Then spend the rest on other stuff. As much as I would love a 1 million gallon tank I think it's impractical.

it does seem difficult to think of a practical one billion dollar setup

At the end of the day, I’d have my massive setups I can only dream of, but otherwise it would be rather modest sizes that allow me to keep what I want, when I want. I’ll have the house big enough to always add on when I feel like it.
