I'm tellin ya! If I were ever to become a thief, I'd be looting diamonds and gold....NOT fish.

Nah man, diamonds and gold are hard to get rid of... you can't just walk into a pawn shop and sell $50,000 worth of diamonds after the big local jewelery store heist was all over the TV! Maybe you got some connections to the russian mob though? :nilly:

I was just reading an article about those people that steal copper from construction sites and such... some ridiculous number was thrown out for how much people can make for that stuff.

Being an electrician, I see the copper thieves a fair amount.
We used to have large 5x5 bins that would hold close to 1000lbs of scrap wire depending on size of the wire.

Just last august we had some crackheads somehow break into our 40ft trailer (they took the lock too :screwy: ) and proceed to steal all of my tools, one of my boots, two left handed gloves a friend of mines tools and the smallest wire we had.

Just because someone comes up with a great scheme to steal stuff doesnt necesarilly mean they are smart enough to know what to take or how to sell it afterwords. For those interested in things like this, tools have pretty much 0 resale value, especially 5 year old or older cordless tools.

Frankly, minerals and ore are much more valuable and easier to get rid of (like copper) as theres really no way to trace it and always a recycler somewhere ready to scrap it, even if its a little less money per pound.

In my area, the local scrap yards now require ID & must keep records of everyone that drops off any type of copper. I don't know that it helps....

A few months ago, this crackhead from Texas backed up a 1980s honda accord coupe to my scrap metal pile & loaded up 1000+ lbs of scrap iron wherever he could fit it. I live on a major highway in a very small town where my family knows everyone and my uncle was the sheriff for many years before he died. No one called the cops because the guy was basically acting like he was supposed to be there. After I noticed a big portion of the pile missing, it took me all of 20 minutes to gather 10 witnesses. A few days later, the deputies came to my work and had me sign the warrant.

It turns out that the SO has been looking for a way to get this guy because he had been breaking into the homes of very old people who reside in a nursing home, but they couldn't prove that it was him. He would cut the power off then steal every inch of wire from the walls and attic, then he went for the copper water pipes. To top it off, he didn't disconnect the water and flooded every house he did this to. The amount and grade of scrap that he stole from my property was enough to make it a felony ($300+ is felony). They locked him up, he skipped bail, and now no longer resides in my state.

I got partial justice for what was stolen from me, but most aren't so lucky.

Sorry for the derail.

Here in Texas I think its legal to shoot the b*stards! But you'd have to careful not to hit a tank!
