Illegal fish questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Honestly, I just think there are far more important things in life to get worked up over then whether a shop is selling Asian aros or not, especially when South American aros and Australian Saratoga are already legal in the USA. I live in Australia where Asian aros are illegal too but I've seen them for sale here and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Especially considering we are allowed to keep the SA variety. Seems a tad hypocritical IMHO.

I live in Australia as well and I'm sorry, do you understand how delicate nature is here in regards to freshwater? Yes, I would report them, if that makes me a tool so be it but I care for the native animal species in each country.

Wow,another country besides the U.S. actually bans them lol?
Prett much all the big exotics are banned here. Funny thing is though most of our waters are infested by carp, yet goldfish are still imported from overseas in huge numbers. See plenty of koi for sale all the time too lol.

Australia bans everything lol. I would love to get a puffer but banned in Australia
Trust me I know mate. Spend most of my spare time on the Murray river Watching the carp populations get bigger and bigger every year yet goldfish and koi are still readily available and perfectly legal to purchase and keep for some unknown reason. Don't think anyone is going to be releasing they're ridiculously expensive " unwanted" arowanas into our local waterways anytime soon.

You would hope not but it does happen. Certain religions and cultures actually buy expensive fish to release. I would hate to end up like Florida in the States. I think they have sort of given up on carp etc, but are trying to make sure it doesn't get worse with new species.

What really annoys me is trying to get meds etc in Aust...don't get me started lol

I'm aware of Australia's bans on many exotic fish and I can see why with the risks that are involved
to the native fish.I just thought that US was the only country that has a stance on Asian aros.

That's sad, carp seem to proliferate in many areas in the world.

Funny thing about Florida's banned list, ...for all the species banned in the state, the government still allowed for the artificial stocking of peacock bass (a highly predatory and fast-growing species) into many local waterways to boost state revenues from sport fishing. To me, this is the ultimate hypocrisy committed by a state government.

Like most other things if there is a dollar to be made the rules are different.
Take the EPA for example, if a company pollutes the air and this pollution is being measured, there are limits to what they can produce.
But if they want to produce more, then all they have to do is buy a more expensive permit that allows them to produce more pollutants.
Lots of things are about money.

It's best if everyone copy & paste their state's list into a word doc and refer to it if in doubt of the legality of a potential purchase.

BTW, the wolfish, Hoplias malabaricus, is illegal in CA and FL.
That's good to know, never knew that. Thank you for clarifing that for me. So is it just that one species or all wolffish in CA and FL? I am moving to Flordia within the next year or so.

Yep.....money talks and bullspit walks.
One of my favorite quotes LOL.
