I hear all the time about people having and taking care of alligator gars. However, from what I know, Alligator Gars grow up to 10 feet long...is it really possible to maintain of of those? Or is everybody talking about some other Alligator Gar I don't know about?

We have members with systems that can easily house gator gars (Atractosteus spatula). I can house a couple but, instead chose to maintain tropical gars. They are identical to gator gars in everything but size. Atractosteus tropicus reach "only" 4 feet.

Oh. I knew a lot of people have huge tanks here, but I just never knew that Alligator Gars could be really kept as pets. Okay, thanks, that answers my question.

:FIREdevil There's only 1 kind of alligator gar but usually they have to let them go because they never knew they could get so big.

In truth, no one should have gator gars, considering that they grow in excess of 9 feet.

I keep 2, two yoy ( young of the year ) who will heve to go to a lake eventually.

They will be the last I own.

Please feel free to include yourself in "No one should own these" But keep in mind that there are "no ones" that have both the experience, space and ability to keep these fish. I could very easily house a Gator gar (Especially since I know a bit about captive ones) if I cared to but like Phil I like the Tropicals a bit more so I'm focusing on these fish.

Like any fish.. one needs to do some basic research and planning before obtaining them and should not get one if you can not house them. The size of these fish is not an Unknown to anyone so there really is little reason to continue stating it.

No species of fish is 'Not suited' for captivity, there are just some people that should not keep them.

I surely am not going to get into a debate with you...and your tiresome, ridiculously pompous "lecturing" posture.

The person who initiated this thread questioned something. I gave my reply. I stated my opinion, period.

I still say ( and I can house them full grown ) that NO ONE should have a 3 metre long fish in captivity. I have 2 of them, which, arguably, I may have "saved " from an LFS, and, as stated, they will eventually go into a lake.

Now before you enter into your "histrionics" about releases ( which I would, in any case, like to be spared from ), rest assured, it is my lake, in my place, without any connection to waterways.

Who are you to say what fish can be kept and what fish should not?? If you think a 3 meter fish is not suitable then you can just not keep them.. don't tell me or others what we should or should not Keep if they can be legally obtained and properly housed.

I'm not arguing with you and I do not care to..I just personally do not care for anyone telling me what fish I should or should not have and I'm getting overly tired of the absurd over 3 meter gator gar story told by those with little true knowledge of these fish Naturally or in captivity.

I say again...
No species of fish is 'Not suited' for captivity, there are just some people that should not keep them.

I'm not lecturing anyone on this, so you can end your defensive posture.. I'm just giving my opinion in response to yours and this happens to be directly related to this Topic...

while i don't want to get into a big arguement, i'd have to say there are fish species not suited for captivity. most of these are cept in captivity anyway and live lives that aren't near what they would be in the wild. pimas for instance, you can give him a 10,000 gallon tank (such as john has) which is beyond anything anybody else has gave it in captivity, but that is no where near the billions of gallons it has in the wild.

not even the guy with the 55,000 gallon tank can fully replicate the wild for fish such as the mekong catfish, the pima or the gator gar, and thats why i think those aren't suited for captivity......but people are going to keep them anyway and we can only praise those who care enough for the fish to give them big homes like john and arapimiag have.
