whats wrong with salt? it helps kill off some bacteria ?? Why not?
what bacteria? he has high ammonia levels

hmmmmmmmm.......are you covering the test tube with your finger and shaking it or does the test tube have a lid?

it has a lid yes lol...people who are giving the old "how to cycle a tank" talk its been done..this is a weird circumstance..people need to understand this lol. i have always did wc...weekly if not more...one thing i didnt take care of is the filters...so its gotta be something with them.. but i squeezed sponges today...we shall seeee

bumpy, i understand that your tank was initially cycled.. but for whatever reason your beneficial bacteria has died off and you are starting from scratch. you have to go through the nitrifying cycle again.

i don't know why it died off. i tried to help you move on from where you are now.

are you still using that ammo-lock crap? that stuff gives false ammonia readings.

this is super simple-
1. do 50% wc's daily using PRIME till your ammonia is gone.
2. clean your sponges weekly how ever you want.
3. rinse your bio media in tank water monthly.
4. buy a new test kit, ive had ones well whithin their expiration date provide false readings.
5. stop dumping any other chems in the tank, its NOT helping.

if you have ammonia due to not doing filter maintenance, then you should also have a significant drop in PH. i forgot all the details but if you have too much of the brown gunk in your filters for too long, it will turn your water acidic as well as give you ammonia. if you do a search you will be able to read about it in more detail.

I can't believe this thread is still going. STOP wasting your money and time! For whatever reason, your system CRASHEDDDDDD!

Give the fish a temporary home somewhere else and cycle your tank again. Do a 100% water change and cycle youre tank again. If you want to cycle your tank faster, you can add bio spira like suggested or another live bacteria called Fritz Zyme which contain live bacteria that is kept in the same way as bio spira and it has an expiration date.

I went throught the same thing. You are listening to too many people giveing you conflicting info and advice!

If you have well established bio media it is unecessary to preserve the bacteria on a sponge which is used for mechanical filteration. now this would not be true if all your filter had was a sponge in that case you would never want to get chorine etc. on it. Most quality filters use sponges for mechanical filteration.

to each his own but I prefer to get my sponges as clean as possible with hot water. I also wring out the sponge thoroughly as to not get tap water on my bio whe reintroducing the sponge. Im also overfiltered so worse case and I did destroy bio in one filter I have plenty more while that one rebuilds
eh...ur right, to each his own.:D
