A fish store near me got caught for stocking illegal fish, they got some massive fines and all illegal stock was destroyed. Now they only have half the ammount of illegal fish as they did before. I asked them why they still sold illegal fish and they said it was due to the fact that the profit made off 1 illegal fish (Asian Aros) is equal to the weeks takings of thier legal fish trade, so in the grand sceme of thing $40,000 in fines wasn't that hard to cover (8-12 fish depending on what type of Asian Aro it was)
See thats the worst freaking part... ok this fish is illegal because it is considered endangered in the wild but since you illegally obtained them we are going to KILL them!!!! yea makes sense to me :nilly::screwy::nilly:

Right that is really stupid.

They can't release them into the wild, aquariums are a huge hot zone of disease activity that they would be risking spreading into the wild.
Can't have that.

hey nova 8, do they still stock aro's?? if so i';m drivin over there!! hehe

They don't have aros in shop, I was driving round yesterday and I went into the shop and asked how much for a Jar, she said "You don't want them, I sell you asian Aro instead. Better looking fish" (they're chinesse). Out of curiousity I asked what types. she said 'I show you" and went behind the counter and pulled out a photo album with picture of aros, their sizes and prices. A green aro was $1,500 @ 6"-8" and the one that caught my eye a Super Red at $20,000 @ 15" :WHOA: .

I am not so sure this keeping endangered species thing(at least the ones that go for tens of thousands of dollars) is necessarily a bad thing. Think about it, anyone willing to pay that much money for one is obviously going to take really damn good care of it. better I would speculate than letting it stay in the wild with other predators around. I don't really think its great to be lowering the stock in the wild....but a couple missing, for possible breeding....well, it doesn't sound that bad to me.

Captain - agreed, however most of those fish are kept singly, unfortunately.

i guess if you are a LFS or your trying to import something you shouldn't, then there is a risk... but once you have it at your place and it's not a public place no authority is comming in to make you pay a fine or take your fish away... there had to be like a super special hi-teck fish patrol lol if you find some fish you shouldn't but wanna have, get it... that's what i whould do... fish patrol come get me....:D
