In-wall aquarium

You asked about clownfish, they are saltwater. If you meant clown loach then they are freshwater. And no, you can't keep clown loach in the size of tank an you are planning.

Check the dimensions of this tank which is fairly popular:
  • Dimensions: 80cm x 47cm x 40cm (WxHxD)
  • Holds up to 130 Litres
  • 6mm glass
For peace of mind, I'll go with 10mm toughened.

For the dimensionally impaired among you, the OP’s most recently stated dimensions of 1000 x 500 x 310 is approximately equivalent to 40” x 20” x 12”, which is approximately 40 US gallons.

This may not be a monster tank, but is a perfectly reasonably sized aquarium for many smaller community fish (e.g., tetras, guppies, dwarf gouramies, betta).

To the OP: given that you’re a novice, I would advise sticking with freshwater fish. While a SW clown fish could technically fit in there, you would need a lot more space for accessory filtration equipment (sump, skimmer etc.), which it doesn’t sound like you have room for.

Thank you for that clarification :)

My first cousin once removed has had freshwater, marine and now tropical fish both at home (all his life) and now has a super massive one in his restaurant and he assures me he will set up the tank for me. I don't want to take the p*** and ask him about everything so here are some more questions. From my reading and speaking to others I get that a sump is the way to go. I can have a sump underneath the DT but:

1. Can the input and output on the DT be on the same side?
2. What about having the input on the bottom?
3. Is a skimmer a must?
4. I get that a pump is needed with a flow rate that falls within certain parameters, and factors that affect this (e.g. angles, valves) and what diameter pipes to use etc... What I don't get is the need for air to ensure it's a quiet system. How do I manipulate and control airflow so that it's not loud?
