In want some input on my indecisive and irresponsible behavior as a fish owner!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, hung out by the tank tonight, the midas/rd was relentless on the JD, they have never had a problem before...the JD ended up hiding behind a rock, couldn't come out or it would get hit...not good...

That is not surprising. You are definitely going to have aggression problems with all those fish together.

I am not going to attempt to tell you what combo of fish to keep because you never know with different fish personalities. I will say that I would keep the BB because they are awsome:headbang2

The advice I see being given here is amazing. The guy admits he is overstocked and admits he cannot get a larger setup and yet there are people telling him to ADD fish. I think only one other person has even mentioned the fact that the fish will all grow larger. Allow me to break it down...

Minimum tank sizes (I think we can all agree to these) with average length.

Midas/RD- 12+" (55g)
JD- 8-10" (40g)
BB- 12+" (55g)
Firemouth- 6" (20g)
Red Terror- 12" (55g)
BP- 8" (40g)

265g worth of fish.

EDIT: I forgot to even mention the dimensions of the tank! It actually does not cover much surface area. No, I am confident that the OP's tank is a disaster waiting to happen.

While you make a point about the footprint, I disagree about needing 265 gallons to house those fish. The values you posted are accurate for a single fish in a tank. The larger the tank the greater the ability to control nitrate creep. My 125 has had more fish in than his at full size and as long as I changed my water weekly, the nitrate never topped 20 ppm. I still think even knowing how big the fish get that losing the firemouth and parrot will allow you to keep the other successfully as long as they get along.

Personally I would lose the BP and the Firemouth and not add anything else.

:iagree:

I would also think about removing the JD, IMO a male might be able to hang better than a Female, but if she's getting picked on it may only be a matter of time before she's toast.

Sounds like a nice looking tank tho. Got any pics?

It has less to do with the numbers and sizes as with the compatability issue.
The RD/Midas, Red Terror and Blackbelt are much more aggro than the others. They will eventually beat down the others. Keep similar temperment fish.
My nitrates never go above 5 and I keep alot more fish in there than this. Never any ammonia and aggression is minimal. All in a 125. I even keep 3 large,1-10",1-9" and 1-7-8", different species of pikes in it. With no aggro towards eachother. For most Crenicichlaholics this is blasphemy, but it works for me.
The right combination and plenty of Filtration and WC can do wonders.

What the heck is a powerhead going to do to stop agression?? :screwy:

The powerhead makes them swim more, thus they use more energy. it worked with my 4 dovii with a jd, rd, fire jewels, gt's, convicts. That's what the heck it did for me!!!!!
