INCREASING LUMP ON HEAD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As far as I know good water keep the fish out of diseases, and when the fish get sick, the hump go smaller ! And water condition also affect the fish's color and their fins.

The purpose of the mirror is to make the fish more aggressive to bring out the hump.

My point is if you have a quality fish, meaning fish with a water hump or gene for a good hump, you do not need the mirror. To me its just more consumption of time and money. To bring the hump out, you just need Plenty of swimming space, really clean water and good food with some gravel for him to move around and once he is comfortable, his hump will come out. I have done that to all my fish even to kamfah. Kamfah are the hardest to bring the hump out too.
As far as food goes, I feel that those expensive food that claim to increase hump are a waste of money. About seven years ago, I did some test on some of my fh that I know are water head. I tested 3 fish. The fish were fed with hump enhancer, I will not name, koi food, and the third fish, I fed a quality pellet. Each fish were fed only one single food for 1 month and the food with the hump enhancer did not show any difference then before the test.

Alot of time I see a low quality fish and the owner wants to get the hump big with mirrors and hump enhancer food. Why waste money on expensive food and time. Just spend a little more money on a nice fish and spend the time to give it a good home and care and it will pay off.
well, the special thing about FH is they are all different and the gene decide the head will be big or not. You can't just test on those fish like that and say the food didn't help. A lot of people after using good foods see the head go bigger and if you use those good food on the big-head-fish, his hump may go bigger ! But only by chance because most of the time, it's help but some didn't.
and if you say low quality fish will don't have big bump is wrong, a very shiny king kamfa fry in Thailand is about $ 10- $20 for a 1'' fish, but maybe 1 out of thousands can have big head,

Nuchal hump is a psysical representation of the fishe's pride in my opinion. Enormous ones are due to genetics but I believe boldness/agression is why the mirror works.

I play with my midas a lot, but sometimes when he's frisky we'll "spar", sort of play fight, he tries to bite me and I try to grab him etc. Every time we do this (and of course I let him win), I notice his hump has gotten a little bigger. Of course they can go down too so you gotta keep your fish happy and proud

THATS A GOOD INFO ......

Everyone in the FH world pretty much agrees that genetics is the number 1 factor in size of the kok. However, anyone who has actually had much experience with owning their own FH's will also be aware that tank conditions, confidence of the fish, and it's general condition and psyche will also affect the size of the kok to some extent.

My take on it is that as long as a fish is healthy and has good diet and clean water, you will get the best sized kok out of it if it feels confidence in the fact that it is the strongest, most dominant fish in it's environment. In contrast, if it is continually challenged by a "challenger" (be it real or in a mirror) then it's kok may well shrink. Example being that I have a naturally fairly "kokky" FH that was living on it's own in a large tank, and it's kok was growing really well. I then put a similar sized FH in the other half of the tank through a divider. The 2 FH's then display and spar with each other constantly through the divider. My original FH is not now as confident in his own dominance. Result ...... his kok shrinks by at least half in 2 or 3 days, and, no, I am not exaggerating.

However, if a fish is only challenged by a "challenger" (again be it real or in a mirror) for a short period of time, then the fish, in it's mind, is confident that it has "won" and has chased the other fish off. THis experience only boosts his confidence in his own dominance. Resulting in, hopefully, optimal kok development.

Hopefully, my mass of words have actually explained my thoughts in a way that can be understood !

well actually that the head in FH is by chance (depends on the gene), some people bought thousands of fish but none of them get the big head, but some people only bought one and they have the lucky fish. Also, i don't really see the mirror help much, give him a good diet and let him see the female more often will help a lot. you can use a glass to make your tank into 2 parts, and put the female into the tank about an hour every day, you will see the fish go crazy when he see girls.

OH THATS a nice idea......
glass partition ,,,,, just for him to see the female.......
how abt leaving the female into his tank.,,.....wud they fight it up

hahaa, I know that.
I took fh that I know have a water head, not any fish and fed them the hump enhancing food.

By low quality, I do not mean price, but in no chance of growing a nice size hump.

I like to ask a question. What do you guys even considered as a big head? :D

Good question, as head size is subjective.
The following picture gives an idea of what good head size is to me.

*note, the last 2 pictures are not mine!
