Inducing Convict to Breed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Feel free to refer to my website and current stocklist to see what species I'm breeding and offering for sale.

There are a few populations occupying low elevation areas, which are already occupied by introduced tilapiine cichlids. Our remaining native species occupy high elevation streams where tropical species(like convicts) are unlikely to become established. The state of Hawaii encourages FW aquaculture for these reason. The conditionally non approved species are temperate species for this reason

We've got convicts, Jaguars cichlids, and neets, among others at 1.000 meters, but I think your highlands are considerably higher yet. I still wouldn't want convicts or Jags in water that didn't freeze. Friend who was diving in a local man-made lake said that neets showed up where the water was quite cold. I know a lake in the mountains here that was stocked with brown trout and jaguar cichlids.

The local convict species (siquia) nests in quarrelsome colonies (I've seen video) and does mobbing of larger predatory fish. Neets are supposedly even meaner. Dovii also seems to tolerate highland and colder waters rather well.

I feel like the people I'm responding to may not even have the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle, so Im checking out of this thread

If Rebecca b is Rebecca brown she has a fair amount of knowledge when it comes to breeding convicts. Dispite your experience, she knows very well what she is talking about.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3828482/ is of interest.

Also, most convict males, per the research papers, seem to want the bigger females. However, one of mine took up with the smallest of three.

They're living creatures, not software.

One of the things about fish that do parental care is they can apparently have preferences even against instinctive behavior and can recognize other individuals as separate individuals.

Yep, that's me. I have posted in another web forum and am a current member of the FB group Central American Cichlids.

I've also had siquia convicts who broke the rules.

Generally A. siquia convicts behave in such and such a way. I don't know what A. nigrofasciatus might do differently. With any fish, I think the more naturally they're kept, the more naturally they'll behave. I've seen a commercial angelfish breeding set up that was anything other than natural -- a pair per ten gallon tank, and with frosted glass strips that were pulled when the fish lay eggs. I'm not sure a commercial fish breeder is interested in the same things I am, and may not see the same fish behavior that I see. Someone breeding Malawian cichlids for sale might strip the females and tumble the eggs, or pull fry early. My goal is to see what the fish do, and have some surviving fry to replace older fish eventually.

For the original poster, growing out the males separately might be the best thing to do. Also, sometimes competition between the girls is useful.

Isn't the question... how do you get them to NOT breed.

I can't get them not to breed, but 13 Mexican mollies are keeping the fry from surviving so far. The tail split is from a close encounter with a parental convict. It healed quite fast on a high protein diet :).FishNovSecond4.jpg

Aren't you still in high school?

Someone needs to grow up a little....

I'm just saying that convicts are quite adaptable critters and they are known to reproduce in various environments, including hot springs in Idaho and Montana to cooler waters in California and New Mexico. Last summer someone caught few YOY convicts out of a lake in Illinois.

I was nodding out of this thread but if you want to alert me, I will respond. Are telling me to grow up? Please answer my question, are you still in H.S and living at your parents or guardian's?
