I'm building a 4,500 gallon pond this spring and would like some really cool fish to stock it with. They're going to have to stay out there all winter, and will be living with a few koi. They dont have to be native, just really out of the ordanary. Maybe some paddlefish or something? Any ideas?

There are plenty of interesting coldwater fish, but unless you intend to snorkel or go fishing in the pond, you probably won't see most of them. One good exception is gar- they spend a lot of time near the surface.

Well the water is going to be crystal clear and I'm putting white sand on the bottom. Its only going to be about 4' deep. And I do plan to snorkle in it during the summer.:D

I'm looking for something big, but I could put a small school of longears in there also. Would they breed if I built a shallow ledge about 2'W x 6'L x 2'D on one side. BTW, dimensions are: 12'W x 12'L x 4'D with a bog filter: 2'W x 6'L x 3'D.

Yes they would breed if there was a shallow end and be sure to to plant that part, because sunfish like shallow planted areas to breed.

theres the hi fin loaches that get huge and wont harm ure kois

Perfect, that'll provide the other fish with some snacks, along with the other little fish breeding in the bog. What other kinds of sunfish would do well with longears?

I dont know about the loaches, I might have some large catfish in there.

The loches hes talking about get 16+ inches and very broad. What about a sturgen? they would be cool in a pond
