Interesting coldwater fish for pond.

I'll ask my lfs if they can order me a few. They dont have very many rare fish though. I'll see if they can get me a sterlet also.

Any idea if they would survive the winter up here? Without a heater, the pond freezes over with about 8 inches of ice. I had to break it up with a sledge hammer one year.

I'm not sure. They're from the Yangtze valley, which has a humid subtropical climate like the mid-southern US. Your winters are a little harsher than they would typically experience in the wild, besides which, as a big river fish, they would normally be protected from temperature extremes by the sheer volume of water around them. I suspect they would be fine as long as the ice was kept open. Summer heat might be a bigger problem.

i would not go with channel cats as they can get up large sizes but maybe go with a fleet of bullheads, they get about 2' and stop growing and there are different breeds of them

Theres quite a bit of shade on one side of the pond and its pretty deep. The water never gets very hot during the summer, but there will be a lot of oxygenating plants and several waterfalls. Like I said in the beggining, bullheads are very shy and reclusive, channel cats are much more active. I already have a balck and a brown bullhead. If they get too big, I can always eat them. JK. I said I was looking for large fish.

ok, but just going to warn you don't go for an actual sturgeon go for the sterlet because a full grown sturgeon would be very unhappy in a pond of that size

A sterlet is an actual sturgeon. "Sturgeon" refers to several fish species that can range from around 2' to supposedly around 20'

Oh, I've seen those. But I have no idea where to get one. I think that would be my one unusual fish.
