Internal Parasites?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok RD, do I check by just testing the water? How will I know if i lost my beneficial bacteria? I have 2 XL sponges that have been established for 3-4 months so I thought I would be okay to clean out the filters

If you have 0=ammonia=nitrites, and more than 5ppm in nitrates, your cycle is fine. You can test the water prior to adding Paraguard each day to make sure you do not have ammonia or nitrites. Nitrites are easy to protect against with salt. Ammonia would have to be dealt with using Prime or other water conditioner to bind the ammonia for 24 hours. You should not dose with Paraguard if you have added a water conditioner to your tank less than 1 hour prior.

If you decide to go the Paraguard route, I would do at least 25% water changes every 3 days.

Check water parameters. Just keep in mind that people here can only help you if they have all the relevant facts at hand.

Okay so I will check water parameters when I get home and then let you guys know what they are and maybe that will give an idea as to how to go about fixing the problem. Thank you

Nitrites 0, nitrates <10ppm, PH 7.0.

Another fish dead. The one with the torn fins that started a few weeks ago. Swim bladder went this morning

Did you check for ammonia? Your fish might be suffering from ammonia burns, since you said they are flickering and dashing. With regards to parasites and bacteria, in most cases fish will be lethargic and won't eat, which is not the case with you.

The test strips I have dont have ammonia, but I dont see how it could be ammonia poisoning when I keep up with maintenance, change 70% of water every week and not overstocked. I am stumped

Get liquid tests or find a fish store that will run the liquid test for ammonia. The strips are not that accurate. If you dose with Prime daily for the whole tank volume, ammonia will be a temporary non-issue.
