Internal Parasites?

I definitely do not see any breathing issues or red gills. And a few weeks before he died his fins were all torn up and missing overnight out of nowhere

No, it always seems to me that they seem very happy after a water change.

If you mean they seem to be happier after a water change that would indicate low water quality prior too which is not good. The fish shouldn't act any different to a large water change.

Maybe hide a bit while working in the tank but aside from that they should be the same. A change is a clear sign they are not happy with prior conditions.

They had been starting to grow back and then this morning his swim bladder went and when I checked on them he couldnt stay upright and died a few minutes later. So first death was the chocolate with a white spot that got bigger over 24 hours and was dead within 36, and the second death was this one. Torn fins out of nowhere then a few weeks later he dies. And only a few smaller fish are flashing and it isnt incredibly often just 3-4 times in a row once an hour or so

Yeah I probably didn't word that correctly. Not much of a difference after a water change but tank always looks great which is why i probably said they seem happy. But definitely no negative change in behavior after a water change

Sounds like a really bad bacterial infection for the Chocolate, hence the death within 36 hours of the white area.

Torn fins over night can be caused by rapid swimming. If he got spooked continually or chased. The bad swimming bladder can be the result of an injury (crash into the tank wall or trauma to the swimming bladder area) or bacterial infection.

What smaller fish? Do they flash when near each other?

I have some 2-3" Geophagus Pellegrini that occassionally flash. Doesn't seem to be when near each other, just against the sand and driftwood

And with the fins, he wasn't chased around I think it is a bacterial thing. My gut says its the same bacterial thing that caused both problems

The test strips I have dont have ammonia, but I dont see how it could be ammonia poisoning when I keep up with maintenance, change 70% of water every week and not overstocked. I am stumped

Hmm then test your tap water for ammonia and nitrates, and also did you add anything to the aquarium that could possibly leach out something. Or any aggressive fish that could be attacking others?
