Not gonna bring heavy politics into it, but come on guys, unemployment isn't free money--someone pays for it. I qualify for plenty of "free" money being a student and working part time, I don't take it because I don't actually need it. Sure, I could buy a 600 gallon tank next quarter no problem, but I choose not to. If you're not desperately hurting for money and have mouths to feed, just move on.
I have never been unemployed more than a couple weeks if I've actively sought out work. Jobs at chains are easy to get... Print out one application, fill it out, make as many copies as there are stores in your surrounding area, and go drop them off. You will get interviews if you keep at it. Some of these places pay pretty well and have benefits. There is always craigslist, drop ins, and word of mouth. Tell everyone you know you're looking for work and you'd be surprised how many people might say "there's a position at my (or my friend's, brother's, husband's, etc.) work open."
Kelly, I was an English major for a while and had a paid gig in journalism. It's not easy, and it doesn't pay well for most (if it pays at all). Your best resource in that industry right now is probably going to be professors at your college--the majority of mine had worked or were currently working at well known local publications.
Ultimately I decided to pursue a different career path. I found I hate editors and writing for deadlines became a chore. Best of luck.
