dont elevate the sump cause then if you have a power failure you have a chance of draining your sump... if you look at my links the sump is level with the pond so I am actually not fighting gravity plus the pump is after all the mechanical filters so it stays clean longer

If I fill a 55 gallon trash can/rainbarrel with scrubbies, polyfill, etc, could I just place a pump or two at the bottom of the can and raise the media like 8-10" off the bottom of the can?

well i just took the plunge and bought a 10' x 30" model with the metal poles at target... $130 hopefully have it set up in about 2-3 weeks...

How long does it usually take to fill one of these beasts?

So far its looking like about 4 squares an hour filling rate. I am so excited about this pond, I am trying to devise ways of filtering the beast now, I am definetly using the filter provided, I mean why not? It may not do much, but at least it will be moving water. I am going to move my fx5 out there as well. I know I need to figure out some way to make one of the large scale DIY wet dry filters. I was thinking about buying a 55 gallon rain barrel and modding it to work.

Also, do I need substrate?
