The prices I quoted for containers WAS used... but every now and then you can find one for a bit less. It might help that the doors don't have to work well they are going to be welded shut anyway...

The really strange thing about containers is that price depends on location. In parts of alaska they have so many containers laying around from one way shipments that you can get all you want for free... the catch... Costs more than they are worth to ship back either by truck...rail...or ship.....thats why they are stuck there in the first place.
 
this spray on liner here seems to be the cheapest easiest way. just sand the container down to the metal and spray/roll on as thick as youd like.
i think your idea may be the cheapest and most durable giant aquarium yet!
