Introduction and Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Does the lid shut tight all around the edges?

In the vid it looks like it will leave a slight gap along the longer sides. Is ther the potential for water to splash out over the sides?

Looks good. But dont put any fine sand in. It will just get sucked out when the rays move around.

I have 8 bags of this sand on Back order ETA???

I think it is larger than blasting silica and smaller than gravel. Does any one else use this sand?

The video shows a lot of condensation. That is because the glass was outside and was only ~50 degrees. I am heading home in a few minutes and we will see how bad the condensation problem is.

There is a 1" gap between the side glass and top to allow for condensation removal. I hope it will be enough. I will probably need to adjust the water level down a bit b/c it is only about 1/4" from the top edge of the glass. I expect there will be splashing with it this high. This is unfortunate b/c the overflow is not adjustable. I will need to rip it out and put a new one in. The liner is "as tough as a truck tire" so I am sure that will be no easy task.

I cant see how fine that sand is.. But it looks fine.. You may get some problems.. try and ask how big/small the grains are.. Also, you are screwed with a 1" gap..! You will have to lower the water level a lot.. Rays love to swim up and down the glass.. This forms small waves.. Not good with a 1 inch gap.. :irked: :nilly:

I cannot change the gap unless I silicone in a piece of acrylic to the top of the glass. How far do you guys think I need to lower the water level? I am having a condensation issue as suspected before. I think that if I lower the level another inch I should be able to put a fan or Fresh air supply between the glass and water.

I may look to sell this tank and build another after all the R&D is done. The concept is great and very expandable and customizable.

I think if you consider another one for rays you should change the foot print a little too.... rays are all over the tank swimmers.... a minimum of 2' tall is really needed....

Ha,

That is a joke right. Why don't I just get a 180 fish tank. I am going for something different. I do not want everyone at my parties looking at a fish tank. It needs to be there without drawing too much attention. Most people do not sit around a fish tank for hours (like us ;) ) This tank is an accessory to a total experience, not a centerpiece.

:chillpill:

The dimensions may change a little, But will not be able to be 24" tall. If, and that is a big painful if, I redo the tank I think i could do 14" tall. (I know every inch counts when I am this shallow) The arowanna was never intended to gro to full adulthood in this tank as I cannot imagine a 24" anything in a tank of this size. I will probably growout from 5 to 12" than find a new home for them.

14" would be alot better... i know your going for different and this set up is awesome.... im just throwing some ideas out there.... maybe some healthy reticulated stings rays as well since they are slow growers.... also if you could hide a blower and move air under the glass that should help with the condensation.... just trying to help ya buddy not jumping on ya ;)
