Introduction and Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I am thinking about a way to duct some fans from the stand to the backside of the bar.
The reason that I really cannot go any deeper is that when sitting at the bar your knees are actually under the overhang of the tank. If the tank gets deeper you will not have anywhere for your legs.

Does anyone know who will have Leo's available in a month or so? I was leaning toward motoros because of the price and location. I can drive to pick them up at Pat's. These would be my first rays and if something should happen to go wrong... $250 vs $1000+. Leos are something to consider though, I agree they would look sweet on black sand.

Nice setup. I will have some CB leo rays available in about 45 days.

epi, I was thinking you could use an inline fan pulling air through and from the tank, with the fan far enough away that you don't hear it run. Putting it near your filtration system would work. You could drill holes in the sides where it isn't obvious and use tubes to direct the air. To get the air across the glass evenly you could use multiple tubes/hoses that join into one which the fan is installed in. I would use some length of tubing on the side where the air is coming in as well, with the intake end tilted up a little so splashed water runs back down into tank.
Or...heat the glass somehow like a rear defroster on a car, windshield on a jet, or the heating element grid people are putting behind their bathroom mirrors. Hard to hide the element though...
Just a couple of thoughts...tank looks great, very nice work.
Cheers

............upon further thought...What I am saying would only work if you could get the air to run the length of the tank...which would only happen if the airspace above the water was semi-sealed...with some black weatherstripping on top of the vertical glass and the hrizontal top piece sitting down on it a little. Without the area sealed, the fan would probably only pull the air from the unsealed area 6 inches or so around the fan line...

I have just finished a first try at controlling the humidity. I have cut some area away from the front pylon. I have 2 120mm computer fans blowing from under the tank and up the center of the pylon to provide fresh air. with both fans running i should get about 60cfm of fresh air under the glass. I have also lowered the water level 1" so now there will be about 2.5" of clearance between the glass and water. I just finished resealing the inside this morning. I will try to get pics up soon.

I thought of doing some kind of car defroster with the wires but that would be a custom heating element and that = $$$. A vacuum will only pull from the area directly adjacent from the inlet whereas a fan will blow across the length/width of the tank. (Mechanical engineer)

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it would work, I thought if you had the intakes spread out and the vacuum tube split it would pull the air pretty evenly across the top.
So you consulted an engineer or are one? If its the latter, congratulations.

The latter. ME - Purdue University class of 2004 baby. yeah :headbang2

I have lowered the water level and added a fresh air fan to blow air up the front pylon and exhaust the humid air from under the glass top. Works like a charm. :nilly:

I just got 160# of Estes Black sand. I haven't put it in, but I may need even more.

Just waiting to hit the lotto so that I can get a couple of Leo's...Should happen any day now. Ive got a good feeling about this ticket. :screwy::ROFL:

My LFS has a Hystrix (I think) 4" dia for $59. I can trade in 2 coral fragments and walk away with no out of pocket expense. I might do that until I hit the powerball.
