I am on the fence about an LFS near me called Captain Nemo's. They have an amazing selection and most of the employees are very knowledgeable. I've played "dumb customer" and gotten many good, correct answers on planted tanks, fresh tanks and marine tanks.

However, I'm fairly certain I saw some bubble gum parrots, the dyed ones. I have such respect for them that I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was a surprise in a shipment, maybe they wanted regular parrots and got the dyed ones. I work in retail and deal with shipments so I understand how these things go. However, there is something that is deliberate that they are doing and I don't know if it is bad enough to boycott this LFS (this would be the third one in my area I've done so with and I'd have to drive 45 mins to get to the next one)

They have a 5,000 gallon saltwater cylinder in the middle of their fish sales area. Its mighty impressive. However, there are two approximately 3 foot black tip reef sharks in it. (7th pic down http://nemosaquarium.com/tour-nemos.html) Is this really as bad as it seems based on the info on the forums? Or is the fact that they are an LFS with an absurdly complex and fancy RO system and the theoretical ability to do daily, even hourly water changes make it somewhat alright?

IDK, i think boycotting the store over that is a bit harsh. If the staff is knowledgeable and they have what you are looking for and in good health, then IMO you have a good lfs. I'm not defending the way they are keeping the sharks and I don't know enough to really defend or criticize them on that..... I just think you need to look past it

Maybe a boycott at this point is too harsh. But at this point, I've seen the dyed parrots and if the shark thing is really super cruel, it will put them on the way. I just want to know if the setup is cruel.

coming from a marketing stand point , the sharks are attention grabbers and what kid wouldnt want to go there and look at the sharks.. I think it is a good marketing strategy..

that looks exactly like big als here in florida.

2nded, that looks exactly like a Big Als

It was a big al's when it opened. Then the big al's compay didn't like that they were buying from other company's so the store dropped the franchise and renamed.
One of the owners is a great guy Joel he was a part owner of martin's aquarum that use to be in Jenkintown. A few of the staff that's there now used to work for martins also. The shark thing is to get people in the door. The parrot thing people want to buy them so of course he's going to sell them. But if any lfs can find you a rare fish they can. Spend some time in there and get to know them you will see.

Hopefully its just a temporary set up that the sharks are sold out of. I walked into a store with a six foot acrylic cylinder and two blacktips in it. One sharks face was torn up and it was blind in one eye.

So that cylinder maybe something like 13-15 feet in diameter judging from the two guys standing next to it. Thats not TOOO BAD but its still nowhere near ideal.

Hopefully the sharks get sold quickly to people with much larger tanks.

The sharks are for sale right?
