Irresponsible LFS?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm unclear about the dyed Parrots - why would anyone dye parrots when they naturally come in basically every color in the rainbow to begin with.

As for blacktips being kept in a 5,000 gallon cylinder tank - I've seen worse. Still if the tank is 15 ft wide - they really don't need to keep the sharks beyond 3 ft long. But then a LFS shouldn't be selling 3 ft long Blacktips to begin with.

I think your taking it to far the tank with the shark's is fine with the maintenance and filtration they have for it. The parrot's may or may not have been ordered on purpose but what can you do boycotting them won't stop dyed bird's.

just dont buy them and ask that they tell the customers that the fish are indeed died to get that coloration.
personally i dont think dyings is as big a deal as people make it in to. yea its cruel but so is declawing cats, cropping ears and tails. killing all sorts of live stock. even better branding cattle, if your against painted fish due to cruelty your a hypocrite if you dont check and make sure your meat comes from non branded cattle.

i think tattooing fish is pretty low on my cruelty scale.

lol i think those dyed mate(btw where talking about freshwater parrots, saltwater parrots do come in alot of colors(oh and btw where talking about fish not the birds as they come in alot of colors too lol)).

about the sharks, i work in a lfs and its just about impossible to get attached to animals that have been at the store a long time, so if the employees at captain nemo's are anything like me, they probably care about the sharks and want whats best for them

That is a crappy set up for those sharks. It's encouraging the wrong ideas when it comes to keeping black tip reefs - which is exactly why so many die in the hands of private owners.

if u boycott ur lfs's for small issues, u will run out of them. every lfs i have been to has had either an employee who isnt as knowledgable as most or a tank which isnt set up right or whatever. for the most part though they know what they're talking about so i stick around. cant comment on the sharks but i have seen lfs's end up with rediculous setups because people bring in fish they cant care for and such. better at a lfs than with people who dont know what they're doing

That kind of shark should never be housed in that type of aquarium. Yes they will live a few years and be fine but it will be a sad premature ending to these animals when they reach an adult size. I have seen worse situations for these sharks and I would not boycott the store but when a customer comes into the store with a bug up there butt about wanting black tips, the first thing they are going to say is that if the LFS can do it why can’t I? Show tanks in aquarium stores are great marketing tools but they are mainly visiual aids of what people can possibly do in there own home or business aquarium. When these black tips reach 5' to 6' and 100 lbs (If they live that long) and they still look fine in that tank then I will retract everything I just said. Don't hold your breath though.

that explains everythimg.its completely the same as big als.same tank setup, same electronics area, everything including the shark tank(which i dont find cruel, ive seen them feed)theres also about 3 or 4 types of huge eels and a few groupers.theres evem 4 sharks in floridas big als.not just one
