That is a crappy set up for those sharks. It's encouraging the wrong ideas when it comes to keeping black tip reefs - which is exactly why so many die in the hands of private owners.

I think Zoodiver is the one here with the most experience, I'd trust him. The sharks aren't for sale on the surface, though everything has a price. This thread wasn't so much about boycotting, but more about the set up of the sharks. I appreciate the enlightenment on the setup, Zoodiver.

Captian Nemos is an honest store with good customer service....... The Hidden Reef is the only lfs I have a problem with in the area...... terrible customer service

Well a dyed parrot - be it a fish or a bird - is still just wrong, on so many levels. Basically the LFS is putting sellability over the health the animals. Which is always a BAD SIGN.

And since we're talking about sellability vs common sense - keeping Blacktip Reefs in a LFS is pretty crazy to begin with. Yes, as Matt(Zoodiver) stated it does encourage the wrong ideas in aquarists that don't fully understand what it takes to keep these sharks.

Even if they do have great customer service and seem to be knowledgeable, the fact is that they're actions are setting some unhealthy & unsafe examples for their customers.

Not saying it's right but from a business standpoint sometimes you bend your morals to stay afloat. If the sharks draw in customers, then it's probably worth the store replacing a dead shark every once in a while. As far as dyed and tattooed fish, it's just wrong. No one knows the long term health effects of this practice. And to me it's cheating from the natural beauty of other fish. I don't think any real hobbyist would buy these fish. Because false beauty is not what this is about. It takes away from what breeders spend years trying to do naturally. Look at electric blue jack dempseys. Only ten years ago was the gene really brought to focus. And because it's natural, I think is more attractive than anything artificial that man could replicate.

I used to frequent this store, and I can say that the sharks seemed to turn over. As the sharks got past the 3 or 4 foot length last time they appeared to be replaced with smaller sharks. There are also some other sharks in the tank BTW, on the bottom, I think they were white spotted Bamboo sharks from memory.

The store is OK, and has some of the best tank space in the area that I've seen, but it has it's fair share of idiot employees. My pet peve is the kids in there in the summer and on weekends. I don't want to be served by a 12 year old who has to be pointed to a tank because he doesn't remember the names of any of the fish (we're still talking common names here). Then unduly stresses the fish with inadequate catching techniques.

I guess a good question would be, does anyone know of a better store in the Philadelphia area?

By the way, anyone wanting to see what not to do, check out the pet store on 40th between chestnut and Market. I have to go there to get frozen food (only place close) but the fish often look pretty appalling, and the shop smells terrible.

there supposed to be inbred as crap from irresponsible breeders. but it is a cool mutation.

I do't think you should boycott it...especially if the next one is 45 Min away... Just don't but the parrots...there are people out there who don't take good care of fish. Might as well not make it harder on yourself because of it.

From what i understand, its pretty hard to inbreed electric blue dempseys. Its a recessive trait, meaning most of the time atleast one parent is a normal jack dempsey that carries the electric blue gene. Mating two electric blues does not give you an entire litter of electric blues, you might not get any in that litter. Or i could be wrong.

As for the sharks, I really hope that its just a temporary holding tank that they sell sharks out of.
