Is a garden hose safe?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Garden hoses are not made of "vinyl", they are made primarily out of PVC, polyvinl chloride. The danger in using a standard garden hose is that PVC uses lead as a stabilizing agent and standing water on PVC can contain HIGH concentrations of lead.

That being said, its the standing water that poses a problem, if you are going to use a standard garden hose, run it until you have flushed out any standing water that may have been in the line and you will be fine.

A few hoses are made of PVC, but most are made of reinforced vinyl. Especially the Ace brand hoses.

I've seen garden hoses that have been treated with anti-fungicide, similar to some of the stuff they use on lawn furniture, etc... I assume that if the hose is left in the heat too long, sometimes those chemicals may leech. (Please correct me if I am wrong.)

I only come to that conclusion, as when my hose sits in the sun all day and I finally run water through it, i sometimes notice that the water contains a weird smell. However, the smell eventually disappears after running the water for a few minutes.

I use this one in the fish room with no problem.

we used a garden hose to replenish our old piranha's tank all the time.. not saying it was a good thing, but it didn't kill Jaws..

i'm a little more careful with the fish i have now.

umdont people use pvc for tanks all the time?

Yes they do

Yes they do, as it is water potable.

to clarify this statement, PVC is only used for cold water, hot water delivered through PVC is not potable

this is referring to plumbing a domestic water supply system, not an aquarium, if you have hot water in your tanks plumbing you have bigger problems than the possible contaminents!!
