I stay in the fish forums and i never venture in here, but my little sister has had a little turtle in a tank for 3 or 4 years and ive never done anything but feed it. Usually her and my mom keep up the tank and stuff. I told my mom i would siphon the tank for her tomorrow since ill be home all day. Im also cleaning out the filter. This turtle sheds like crazy so this has to be done frequently. But when i siphon out the water, do i need to declorinate it or anything?

if i were u i would clean it at least once every 3-6 months. since they are not water breathing animals it really does not matter. since it hasn't been cleaned for years, i would at least get into the habit of cleaning the tank at least once a year at least. unless u have fish living with it or feed it live animals i would not worry about extensive cleanings. just get it a floating log or something for it to retreat to. no, i meant i havent ever cleaned it. They keep it maintained about once every 2 months. Im just used to my fish and ive never fooled with the turtle. But ill condition the water tomorrow when i change it. Thanks for the help guys

i had red eared sliders for years and never did a dechlor, they worked out fine. in my opinion its really your own personal preference.

Just to put it into perspective, almost everyday I change 25% of the water in my 100 gallon turtle tub and I even run a canister filter rated for up to 200 gallon tanks. It contains 2 Musk Turtles, 10 Giant Danios, 1 female Convict Cichlid and 8" pleco. So it's a little more heavily stocked then yours.

Turtles are very messy animals so make sure to either do lots of water changes and/or run a filter rated for at least twice the volume of water your turtles lives in.

So what kind of turtle is this and what size is the tank?

No no no. You MUST change the water more frequently. Just because it breathes atmospheric oxygen instead of dissolved oxygen does not mean you can slouch on the water changes. Poor water quality will increase the risk of fungus, shell rot, etc. It is not healthy for the animal.

I would suggest changing the water weekly, if not twice a week. At least. What filter are you running?

Actually, what filter and what tank? Because if it is a larger tank, you can slack on the wc's. Then you could get away with once a month.
