Is a turtle water change the same as a fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its just a cheap walmart 5-15ga hobfilter on a 10 ga tank

i actually never dechlored turtle tank water... and never had one problem...i changed water once to twice a week...

No need to declor the water:D Beleave me when I say this;) I have about 30 turts of 12 species and NEVER had a problem about that. Sometimes when I do a massive water change in the outdoor pond some of the animals get withish eyes but thats it and quicly fades. What can and will harm your siter´s turt is the water poluants if you dont change the water. Proced like you would with fish, siphon about 40% of the water, clean the filter in that same water, get rid of that waste water, fill your tank with new water and that´s it:)

if i were u i would clean it at least once every 3-6 months. since they are not water breathing animals it really does not matter. since it hasn't been cleaned for years, i would at least get into the habit of cleaning the tank at least once a year at least. unless u have fish living with it or feed it live animals i would not worry about extensive cleanings. just get it a floating log or something for it to retreat to. THAT´S WAY TO SHORT OF A NORMAL TURTLE TANK WATER CHANGE NEED:screwy::grinno: And yes it maters, in fact it matters a lot, when I have hachlings, sick animals or quarentine animals I often do a 100% water change daily. And many turtles can get some of their oxigen by cutaneos breading, they dont like dirty water. That will simply lower their defences and get them prone to skin, lung ,eye, etc healt issious. That will not only endanger your turtles but you as well, Salmonella, protozoans, etc, that would be in a much lower concentracion,if at all, in a healty clean tank will do what they do best wich is breed in a exponencial way. Turtle are very messy and so it takes a considerable effort to keep their habitats clean, by water changes and biological and mecanical filter use. Wich doesant mean we should daily scrub their tanks sparkly clean. We need beneficial bacteria to help us with this endeavor so dont change all water at once(unless its a hachling or quarentine tank and you are doing it daily) and clean the filter medium in the tank´s water. Turtles can be just as afected as fish by the water condicions if it deterioriates. Its true they are less picky than fish(or at least many are) regarding ph,alcalinity, the presence of clorium, etc but they need their water changes, its mandatory for healty turts. At least 1-2 times a week for healty adults kept inside and more for young ones its the minimum;)

just remember i posted this before we found out about it was in a 10 G so quit quoting me. i've had 30+ turtles and never had one die. so at least i got the ball rolling on cleaning the tank. and with a small tank like that i would reccomend a larger tank which i don't think any body has reccomended. and also make sure to scrub there shell with a tooth brush to remove algae and waste. under gravel filters are best for them. and since it has been there for 3-4 years samonella is really not a problem coura. the likelyhood of them having that is when they are under 4". if u are not looking into getting a larger tank then plant the tank and get them use to feeders again. Lol. Salmonella is still in a turtle with a carpace over 4". The salmonella is just more concentrated when it is under 4". Also, there is no real need to scrub a turtles shell with a toothbrush :screwy:

And UGF do absolutely nothing, besides trap decomposing matter, and slowly release poison. Finally, why are you even suggesting he can get away with the tank he has? A turtle should get about 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle, give or take. There is absolutely no species of turtle that can thrive in a 10 gallon for life.....

I dechlorinate my water changes to look after the BB in my filter and so as not to kill the feeder fish but my turtles don't really care.
