I have a 75 gallon tank with 1 convict cichlid, 1 jack dempsey, 1 "flowerhorn hybrid", 1 pleco and 7 emerald cory catfish. I realize this is not an ideal community and I have other large tanks for future transfers.
My fish have been flashing semi-regularly for the past several weeks. Mostly my convict cichlid and occasionally some of my emerlad cory catfish. The corys will also frequently swim to the surface and back down again rapidly. I've heard mixed info as to whether this is normal. No other observable symptoms.
On 5/14 I purchased and brought home a Green terror cichlid which I did not quarantine. Immediately my other cichlids terrorized the new green terror. I turned off the lights and checked on them a few hours later. While the green terror was observably stressed, no physical wounds or symptoms of infection were present and everyone had calmed down to resonable cohabitation.
Yesterday, 5/15 my green terror was covered in white spots. All over the fins and body, too many to count. I will include photos of the fish 24 hours after introducing him. No spots were visible on the first day.
I immediately believed it was ich. I dosed 1 tbsp per 5 gallons of API aqaurium salt and raised the temperature over 16 hours from 78°F to 82°F which has my heater setting maxed out.
I am posting this 56 hours after introducing the green terror. I have fritz coppersafe on hand as well as more aqaurium salt. I am planning to aquire Ich-X by 5/18. I am prepared to increase salt concentration to 1 tbsp per 2.5 gallons or dose full strength coppersafe if I can't get Ich -X.
I am concerned for how either will effect my corys and pleco, as well as my confidence in diagnosis as this is my first experience with Ich.
I found the situation unusual with the green terror going from spotless to completely covered in 24 hours. I've read that it may be stress ich or Epistylis.
I was also struggling to find out why my fish were flashing with no visible parasites.
There have been no new fish in my 75 gallon since February. I water change 50% weekly and dose 8 grams per 5 gallons of seachem equilibrium. I am currently postponing my water change by 1 day depending on treatment.
My parameters are
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrate <40 ppm pre water change
Ph 7.8
13 dGH
6 dKH
I will include photos of the green terror as well as the cichlids unaffected and continue to update.
