The behaviour is somewhat normal. I see my RTG do it once in a while. As to the scales, I'm not sure it's genetic or part of the strain. It's usually related to poor water quality. My RTG is blue based but doesn't have scales like that. How long have you had him?

I had him since DEC 08. Definitely not water quality (i do measure it with API kit). He lives with the red aro which has very even and nice scales (though they are divided). I have noticed that all photos of BBXB on indodragon that i have seen so far have this kind of uneven look.
Well, it's not just blue based aros that get that way. There's 2 emperor reds at the LFS I deal with. One had chipped/cracked scales, the other doesn't. I see lots of variation in how severe it is on different fish, but I'm not sure it's genetic?

Hmm, on close examination of indodragon site, the red appear to have the same effect as well (these are usually fairly old looking though). hheeheheh my red (not quite red yet) has very even looking scales ^^ in the same tank on the other side of the divider
